Today I workout on the elliptical trainer and wore a HRM . My HRM said I burned 334 calories for 35 minutes (I am not very fast on it ) and I checked with MFP and it said I burned 585 calories . I used the HRM's numbers but was interested to see what others would have to say about this . So what you would choose the HRM or MFP ??

i dont use elliptical, but in other exercises- in my experience... HRM!! always right. MFP seems to over estimate.

I just got a HRM and have been comparing and most of the time MFP is WAY more than the monitor, but not always (I had one run that the HRM said I had 100 more calories burned than MFP). So I am just going to use my HRM monitor whenever possible and call it good.

I use my HRM. My elliptical is usually off by 40-60 calories depending how long I go.

I always use the HRM. For me it burns more calories than what MFP says because I always use "Cardio" selection, therefor I'm working harder than MFP is 'thinking'.

Hrm, always. But if your hrm doesn't subtract your bmr for you, subtract that if you really want accuracy.

Usually the HRM if and only if, it has a chest strap and has all of your information(age, weight, height and gender).

Some HRM's(like Timex) give a very inflated calorie burn.. mainly because it assumes everyone is a male. Polars on the other hand tend to be more accurate in estimating calories because you can enter all of the information in.

i found that MFP was over estimating by around 40%. Polar FT4 has been excellent.
