Family member death from obesity?

My grandmother was morbidly obese and had diabetes. She did not try to lose weight and did not eat the right foods or take care of her diabetes. I loved my grandmother so much. She died when I was 9 years old. She was only 54. My mother is now in the hospital. She has heart disease and chonic pancreatitis. She too does not eat the right foods or take proper care of herself. My mother is 52. I love my mother so much and the thought of losing her brings me to tears. I am 26 and I am overweight. I have no health problems yet. But what makes me mad is that my mother watched her mother get sicker and sicker and had to watch in frustration as she did not take proper care of herself. Now I am watching my mother in a similar situation. My mother is overweight but not obese. But, she does not eat healthy and does not follow dr. orders. I want to break the cycle. I will not allow my son to sit in anger and sadness and frustration as I eat myself into an early grave. Sitting at the hospital with my mom last night trying so hard not to cry - it really hit me.

You are strong enough to save your own life. You have to be. No one can do it for you, as you sadly have seen from your family history.
Please break the cycle. ((hugs))0 -
I'm so sorry for your loss, and for the condition your mother is in.
Good for you for wanting to make change, and all the best luck in achieving it! I know my mom, who's also overweight and has diabetes has been taking a closer look at her habits since she's seen me losing weight (after, of course, the initial "you're being a health maniac" phase)- hopefully yours will do the same. And most hopefully, you'll be able to help your son make better choices for his life!!0 -
You have taken the first step, by coming on MFP and breaking the cycle. Keep up the good work and I wish you grear sucess in your weight loss journey.

I feel for you..
My mom is 57 and is very morbidly obese she has heart disease , diabetes , blood clots in the lungs and other health problems as well.. She can't walk well due to bad knees caused by her weight.. So she sits alot and stays in bed ..
She has been this way for about 6 years now and i have talked to her about what she needs to do and the Doctors have told if she doesn't lose this weight she die..
This is my BIGGEST! Reason for wanting to lose this weight.. I have seen her get bigger and have lots of health problems and i don't want to be like her.. I have 3 childern my 1st son is a diabete and my daughter is borderline.. so far my 2nd son hasn't had any health problems and hope he wont.. So i know what you are talking about of watching your family have weight and health problems and wanting to make sure you dont' get that way or your childern to have weight and health problems..0
