How do you prevent and what causes a "stitch" in your ribs while running?

I find if I go slow - I don't have that problem, but if I try and push to my max speed too quickly I will have trouble with it. Not sure WHAT causes it, but I know going slow helps prevent it (for me anyway). Since I am a treadmill runner - I gradually increase my pace until I get to my max speed (usually after 15 mins or so of being on it).0

Magnesium helps. Eat a lot of green leafy veggies. It helped me tremendously when I increase my veggies. I really don't get them anymore. You can also take a magnesium supplement.0

No eating or drinking a lot before running. I find that if I change how I breathe I can control it when it happens. There are quite a few ideas on what causes it. Eating and drinking I have found is a major one with me.0

Cause is a build up of lactic acid in the muscle. Going slowly gives the muscle a chance to recover. Lactic acid is formed during anaerobic activity & is dealt with by the liver, but it has to get out of the muscle into the bloodstream first. Going slowly allows the muscles to perform some aerobic activity.0
