Calories Burnt Stepping

So I got myself a cinder block today so i could do step aerobics at home, granted its like 10 inches high and i only made it like 7 minutes, based on my weight mfp figures i burnt 199 calories doing 7 minutes. If I walk for 30 minutes it says i burn roughly 300 calories, so doesnt the stepping calorie burn sound too good to be true?!?

I find that really intensive burns at the gym are roughly 600 cals an hour.
I think your walking burn is probably on the high side, and I think 10 minutes of stepping would be about 100 cals.0 -
well i believe the walk burns that, im like 375 pounds lol and im pretty sweaty by the time im done walking... i just find it hard to believe its possible to burn 199 calories in 7 minutes no matter what your weight is0

@375 pounds that is probably accurate for walking but that STILL seems high for 7 minutes of stepping. I burn approximately 1200-1500 per hour bike riding. 7 minutes of that 1.25 miles is about 175 calories max. I would think if I did 7 minutes on a step I would burn maybe 10 cals per minute.
The more you weigh (sorry) the more calories you are going to burn doing the exact same exercise as another individual who is lighter doing the exact same exercise. However it depends on what byour heart rate is and the number of reps you are doing. Is your heart rate near 80% of max after 7 minutes? Most likely not.0 -

no i totally get that! I just plan on trying to do 5 minutes every hour and at that rate im going to burn way more calories than i eat if thats accurate lol0 -

Also, try investing in a heart rate monitor with a chest strap. That will give you a closer measure of the calories you're burning.0 -
thanks guys, i think i need an hrm, cuz that seems too good to be true0

As you see I retracted the original statement. If you did that for an hour it means you would have done 2500+ calories in an hour and that's hard to phathom.. In order to lose a pound you have to burn 3,400 calories so I don't think you could lose a pound by doing that for 1.5 hours unless you are doing it at superspeed.
. I would do a regimen (walking) that allows you to burn more calories and maintain some consistency.0 -

lol, thats what i was thinking also, it seems kind of impossible to burn that much in an hour0 -
I was looking online for that answer and came up with not an accurate assessment but maybe you can get a more clearer understanding:
125 pound person 155 pound person 185 pound person
Gym Activities
Weight Lifting: general 90 112 133
Aerobics: water 120 149 178
Stretching, Hatha Yoga 120 149 178
Calisthenics: moderate 135 167 200
Riders: general (ie., HealthRider) 150 186 222
Aerobics: low impact 165 205 244
Stair Step Machine: general 180 223 266
Teaching aerobics 180 223 266
Weight Lifting: vigorous 180 223 266
Aerobics, Step: low impact 210 260 311
So from this formula I added 50 calories per every 30 lbs of weight. Based on this (and believe me it isnt scientific) You would burn about 600 calories per 30 minutes based on your current weight.0 -
are those amounts for 1/2 hour?0
