I am just wondering how many people on here find that they are ALWAYS over on their sugar intake? I tend to be able to stick to my calories but sugar is always high. I know it's my fault because I do like sweet snacks. So here is the question.... if I am sticking to calories but I am over on sugar, will this slow down my weight loss? x x x

Nope it wont :] I dont even track sugar anymore
  • The weight loss I'm not sure about but I try to stick with natural sweets, fruits, yogurt, granola bars, milk. I avoid created sweets like candy bars, gum, ice cream (unless it is sugar free). By not eating created sugars, I feel better. I think the weight loss just comes with it because we are carefull with calories, fat, and increasing exercise. Hope this helps.
  • Yes,of course, because the extra sugar you put in your body is immediately transformed in fat. You need to understand that there are different kinds of calories. 200 calories taken from tomatoes are not the equivalent of 200 calories taken from chocolate. You need to understand you body and the way it works but in the large picture, you can eat 2000 calories every day of healthy foods and loose weight because they are easily digested and they fasten your metabolism, and at the same time you can eat 1200 calories/day and gain weight because the foods you eat are bad for you, they turn into fat, they slow your metabolism and you can even put yourself into starvation mode (if you eat 2 chocolates you pretty much have al the calories so you stop eating)

I go over it every day. It annoys me as I barely eat any sweets, chocolate and so on. I do it lots of fruit, dried and fresh. I have started to ignore it.

LMAO. You have no clue what you are talking about. You need to do some research.

They disproved everything you just said in my FIRST year of dietetics schooling.
  • If you disapprove you should answer the question yourself:)) but all I said is true, and it is not taken from the internet or from other crazy places, but from medical books that i personally have read. Still, if I am wrong, enlighten me;)

Yes, sugar will slow down your ability to get lean. You still might loose weight but it will definitely slow down how quickly you get lean. The sugar, regardless of type or source, will cause an insulin rise. Insulin is a hormone that has a direct effect on how much of what you eat get stored as triglycerides (fat) and how much gets burned as fuel. The more sugar, the more insulin, the more insulin, the more triglyceride storage. Luckily, insulin is also one of the only hormones that we can actually intentionally control by our diet.

Now, how much of that sugar gets stored as fat is an individual thing. Some peoples bodies are very good at converting sugar to useful fuel. Other people (like me) are horrible at it. So basically, like anything else in your personal diet, you have to experiment and find what works for you. For me, I usually stay under 20g of sugar a day. Some days, like yesterday I go over. Usually because of eating out. I don't really miss the sweet stuff. I did for a while but now sweet things are just too sweet. The trick is substitution. There's nothing in fruits that you can't get in veggies, etc.

My recommendation (and this is slanted by my own personal diet requirements) is to cut back on all forms of sugar as much as possible. Play around with your numbers and find a point where you are both satisfied with the amount of sugar you are eating, and with how healthy you feel. Then use that number as you're goal. I think that most people would be surprised at how little sugar they can actually be happy with if they really paid attention.
  • ok,i don't want to be talking and not showing. i am going to post a couple of links that i randomly picked out right now, of course you can do your own research, this is just for orientation. so, for the fact that sugar starts turning into fat at some point go to http://caloriecount.about.com/sugar-turn-fat-digestion-q6489 , for the fact that there are different kinds of calories go to http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20080630100055AAgzrDF , and about the metabolism going down or up,depending on what you eat I couldn't find exactly what I was looking for but I found a link that gives some information about it : http://thyroid.about.com/od/loseweightsuccessfully/a/metabolism.htm. I would suggest some books but I live in Romania and you probably couldn't find most of them in your country:)

I always blow my sugar allowance at breakfast alone...thats with just a small glass of grapefruit juice and a handful of blueberries on my porridge. I don't worry too much about the sugar now as long as I don't go over by too much. (I actually double what MFP sets)
My last blood test showed quite a drop in my glucose levels from when I was borderline diabetic a year ago so I figure I am doing ok sugarwise.
