Exercising in the heat + headaches = :(

I don't do well in the heat. I get very fatigued very quickly and get headaches pretty frequently. I don't want that to deter me from working out, but I also don't want to load up on Tylenol. Anyone else have this problem, and what do you do to help?

Thanks in advance!

  • I'm the same way. It happens even when I'm just in the sun for fun, not just working out. The only solution? Limit your exposure and make sure you're hydrated BEFORE you enter the heat. Even tylenol can't do much for you, really water is your best bet besides limiting your outside time

don't play outside during the hottest part of the day. before 10 or after 6 are the best. Lots and Lots and Lots of water.

My problem is that I do 90% of my working out at home, and we do not have an air conditioner, hahaha. Thanks, I'll try and drink the a lot more of my water in the morning before the heat hits, rather than spreading it through the day.

Keep as hydrated as possible. Your blood vessels are constricting, causing the headaches, in order to keep as much fluids as possible. If this happens a LOT, avoid running in direct sunlight. Try running in the early morning or late afternoon when the sun is lower and the weather cooler.

I also deal with the same problem; when i go out to do my walks and it's hot i get a huge headache!! Normally i just push water throughout the walk and when i get home and just kick back and relax and eat a popcicle and wait for the headache to wear off. Although the other day i got one so bad i had to take ibprofin and lay down and rest. Not sure what else to do ,because i'm not going to quit walking! Hope it gets better for you-good luck!!

If you are open to using supplements, some of the pre-workout drinks out there are Vaso-dilators, which dilate your blood vessels and counteract the effects of the heat constricting them.

I think the most important thing is to remain hydrated though. Most heat headaches are caused by lack of fluid, and not just WHILE you are working out, make sure your body is properly hydrated before you begin.

**Edit: one of the vaso-dilators I know of is BSN's N.O. Xplode. I use it, seems to work great.**

I also have this problem. I have been drinking a Powerade Zero before I go out. It really seems to help.

Exercise when it's cool - for me in summer, that means going out for a run at 6am and moving less during the heat of the day.
Increase your water intake during the whole day , it's very likely that the headaches are related to dehydration.
  • I live in Lake Havasu city az..where it can get to 116 and higher, with no relief...I drink lots of water, before, during, and after...it helps the headaches alot....then I try to just rest my body and brain after that.....meditating helps too!
