I have PCOS and have been only taking Metformin on/off for 6 years (1500-2000mg) daily. In 2008 I added Fish Oil 3xdaily and Niacin Daily for increase Triglycerides Levels. I have seen several MFP friends using some or all of these vitamins/minerals but i was curious if any others have taken and if so did you notice any differences? I am trying to come off the Metformin *I concieved my son naturally without meds in 2007* and we are wanting to conceive our 2nd the same way and was curious if these would help..any advice or success stories would be greatly appreciated

  • I have PCOS as well, and was unsuccessful with Niacin (I had flushing), but had success with Red Yest Rice, Flax Seed Oil, and Fish Oil to lower my cholesterol. I have never been on Metformin, but was told that it could be a possibility. I also refuse to take any of the Lipitor-type drugs as the side effects are so unpleasant (tried it for a week before trying Niacin). But I haven't tried the other supplements you listed. I'm very interested to know if they help too!

What have your struggles/obstacles and/or your tips and successesbeen for weight loss as someone with PCOS? I find that my loss goes in awful, frustrating cycles, and sometimes stall altogether. I have steadily gained weight since I was diagnosed, just keeping the gain at bay is hard.

    Good luck to you!
  • I have been diagnosed with PCOS which my doctor said was interesting considering my cholestorol was not high and I am a pear shaped woman. I also have weighed between 160-195 and 5 ' 6 1/2 inches for years. I am currently at 168 and take 1800 mg metformin a day. I have never tried the other vitamins and have not conceived even with clomid. I am almost 37 so, I may never conceive, but have started to accept it. I took Ortho tri-cyclen for 10 + years, maximum dose, had a progesterone IUD for two years due to problems with high blood pressure, and took accutane 3 courses - spaced about 1 year apart from 23-26. I often wonder if I caused my own infertility by taking all that stuff, and if the hypertension was caused by the birth control pill usage. My OBGYN says "Of course not!" - but I still wonder.
  • Did you ever ovulate with clomid? Also I have heard women who didn't conceive with clomid once they started an antiandrogen pill they conceived another fact is if you want to concise with PCOS you need an RE and 37 totally not too late!!!! Don't give out up on faith!!! I truly believe that those who are obidient to God will receive those blessings! But I would check into seeing an RE if children is what your heart desires

I found that my struggles came after pregnancy ... I didn't even know I had PCOS I was never overweight and had good blood levels only missed periods which is why I went to dr to begin with. They performed HSG and vag u/s and diagnosed me with PCOS in 2005 I took some Meds but quit as I am hypoglycemic which is odd got pregnant and thought I beat PCOS only for it to kick in high gear! So now I struggle to lose weight

i dont take any supplements but was on met from dec. 2010 to july 5th i was taken off of it because id lost so much weight and was having reg. periods (reg. for me about 40 cycles) was taken off of it and still had another period about 43 day cycle not being on the met before that i prob. had 2 maybe 3 a year from the time i was 12 so i think just the loosing weight does the best and yes i agree its harder with pcos but i try to pretend that isnt a factor so just push as hard as you can and you'll loose unfortunately it seems like for the effort you put in you prob. lose half what it feels like you should keep trying glad you conceived the first 1! that makes me happy i always get scared thinking about that im not in a relationship so thats not a factor at the moment but still a concern of mine also when i find the guy telling him it might be an issue is also a fear of mine anyway best of luck

Did you lose weight - at least in part - because of the met?

I have PCOS and IR and have had AMAZING results with Mulberry Leaf supplements.
  • I ovulated, but your eggs have to be a certain size to be viable and mine were always at least 20% to small. There are not a lot of RE's where I live and I have already spent a lot of money, so I am hoping the weight loss helps. PCOS is directly tied to insulin levels isn't it? My doctor says protein, protein, protein! I used to be a vegetarian. that was mostly breads, pasta, fruit and a little soy. Not a lot of actual veggies... I eat meat and veggies now, and feel much better! I really feel the metformin has helped with weight loss because I am not hungry all the time with steady blood sugar levels.
  • I also agree, have tried cinnamon, much better for me with metformin.
