Diabetes sucks!

I've been using MFP since the end of July (though its been on my phone much longer) when I was diagnosed with type II diabetes. The first step to managing this crappy illness is to get my weight down from 120kgs (264lbs) to 80ish kgs (176lbs). I've got down to 108kg (237lbs) so far though calorie counting and exercise. Any hints and tips for weight loss and managing diabetes welcome.

Im PCOS Insulin Restant similar to diabetes and my dr tells me higer protein and lower carbs and the carbs i do eat should be high GI..although that doesnt always help lol..also if your on pills the time of day (around meals and exercise) is very important when you take them also bc the meds help lower BS levels and so you may want to talk to your pharmist about the timing of your pills so that they are most effective...Good luck and i know that you can do this!0

Four months ago, I had a blood sugar reading of 343, and a week later 240. My A1C was 11.7. Yikes!!! I really hadn't thought of all the symptons I had were diabetes. Anyway, I was put on Metformin, and 2 weeks later, my bs was down so much, my Dr. took me off the Metformin. While on MFP, I have friended some fantastic people who are fight diabetes, and with their info, and my cutting carbs and processed sugars, my bs has been between 70 - 138 and my A1C was 6.5. I've changed my eating to much that along the way, I have lost 30 lbs. not from dieting, but just eating healthy and staying away from white breads, french fries, fast food, and processed sugars. Feel free to friend me if you like. It's taken a while, but I THINK I've got it down. Now just to stick with it the rest of my lilfe. I really don't ever want to have to take meds. This is definately an excellent resource for beating diabetes!!!0

I am with you on that one! I was diagnosed about 5 years ago and managed with no medication for a few years. As I have gotten older and find weight control harder I have been put on medication and keep getting more added or changed. The frustrating thing is that some of the medication causes weight gain so I put on weight without trying! I am one step away from insulin which I don't want to do so I am trying to start using MFP faithfully to keep my eating under control, track my exercise and hopefully lose enough weight to decrease my meds. Maybe you should start a Diabetes sucks group!0

Congrats on your success so far! If you're losing under a doctor's supervision, you could speak to him/her about seeing a nutritionist. A couple of good books to read are the Schwartzbein Principle (she is an endocrinologist specializing in diabetes--info about her diet book here http://www.prohealth.com/diabetes/blog/boardDetail.cfm?id=63396) and Primal Body Primal Mind by Nora Gedgaudas, a Certified Nutrition Therapist. Weight loss when clinical diabetes exists isn't going to have a quick fix--no doubt took a lifetime to develop and will take months or more to correct or control.0

@NancyAnn ~ thanks for that.. it's good to know that just by being more careful with food you can stay off Metformin. My A1C was 10.9 in July and the Doc is giving 3 months to make some changes before deciding on any drugs. It's also great to see how much positive change you have achieved in such a short time.0

Bump! Thanks for posting. I just found out I'm riding that little fence between Pre-Diabeties and Diabetes.0
