Hiya,
Am seriously thinking about joining the gym this week but not sure where to start regarding what machines to use, how often and how long for. I know some gym's actually give you a program to start you off but I know some don't. Have anyone got any programs to start off with to help with weight loss?
Thanks
Jonny

My weight loss in January was jumped started via a "Biggest Loser" program offered here at our gym. If the gym has a trainer ask them for advice. They can usually steer you in the right direction and instruct you on how to use the machines. You should get this wehen you join any gym...don't be afraid to ask.

Hi Johnny,
Cardio is good for weight loss, the treadmill is great, if your knees aren't so good, the elliptical is the next best. Start off slow and build up your endurance if you haven't run in a while. I have also heardvwhen you lift weights higher reps and lower weights are better for firming up vs bulking up. I find for myself I like to just pick exercises to do. I might run and hit the heavy bag one day and run on the elliptical the next. Just try our some different machines and see what you like, remember that any time at the gym even 20 minutes is better than none. Good luck with your goals.0 -
I go to the gym 4 times a week and it has I would recommend that you think about what specifically you are trying to accomplish. I do 35-40 minutes of cardio to burn fat and then alternate some upper body machines one day with some lower body machines the next. I use a blank check register in my little gym bag to keep up with how much weight and how many reps I did the last time. It keeps me moving forward. Every week I try to do a little more weight or a few more reps in one or two exercises. It is totally amazing what you will accomplish in a short period of time. A good gym will have a trainer who will help you whenever you need it not just when you join. Good luck and enjoy the new stronger you!!0

I just joined Premier Fitness and ABSOLUTELY love them. They provide you with 3 FREE training sessions with a trainer who develops work-outs based on your current status (with your weight and measurements) and also any ailments you may be suffering from (e.g. bad back, knees, surgeries, etc.). So, if you have any Premier Fitnesses close by I would recommend them.
But, as someone else stated, the elliptical is a great way to start out in the gym. I wouldn't recommend going over 30 minutes (as my Trainer has instructed your muscles have reached their max with cardio at this time) and would alternate both directions to work all muscles in your legs. Post elliptical workouts, I would then cool down on the track, stretch and utilize some free weights to work your obliques and upper torso. Doing bicep and tricep curls, side bends, squats and lungs will give you some additional cardio (very mild) while working upper muscles.
Good luck and I wish you the best on this endeavor!0
