Heart Rate Monitor?

I have been thinking of getting a heart rate monitor for awhile now. I got one from WalMart this weekend, and I hate it. It is a piece of junk IMO. I saw one at Hibbit Sports for &70 and have wanted it for quite awhile, I just can't make myself spring for it unless I know it is totally worth it. I really just want to know how many calories I burn. I think it is a MIO? Maybe?? Not sure, but just wanted other peoples opinions...

People on this site seem to favor the Polar brand. I have the FT4, and I like it.0

I have an HRM and I would say the investment is TOTALLY worth it! Polar gets really good reviews. I have a Timex and have been very happy with it.0

Reebok Precision Trainer XT Heart–Rate Monitor with Chest Strap
Had it for close to 4 years now. Works great.0 -
I also have the polar FT4. it comes with a chest strap which will give you a more accurate reading of your calories burned.0

The ones from Walmart tend to be junk and break pretty quick... So I'm glad you realized that.
Polar really is the best brand around.. either the FT4 or Ft7. Easy to use/set up and accurate in estimating calories.
Timex is a crap brand.. steer clear of them.0 -
Polar with chest strap is the way to go. And yes, they work and work really well (I used to work with Polar).
Has to have a chest strap though in order to be accurate. The ones that read from your wrist only are not accurate.
Cheapest place to buy a Polar is Amazon.com0 -
I've using a POLAR FT4 since april and I love it! It cost about $75 at one of our local sporting goods stores. I'd really recommend it. The chest strap component is very important as it monitors a constant heart rate. And, the watch part takes all of your personal stats so the calculation is as accurate as HRM can do. Nothings perfect BUT this ones great!
Getting my HRM totally changed the way I worked out and made my workouts more effective.
Best of Luck........0 -
I have a polar F4 with a chest strap it also works in the pool..absolutely love it!0

I'm shopping for one also. Everyone keeps saying you can't go wrong with a Polar...and make sure it has a chest strap for continious hrm as well as calories burned. I have bought one of those crappy ones from walmart...it was just a waste of $40. I'm gonna hit up ****'s sporting goods since its close by...I'm leaning towards the Polar FT7F0

I bought the ladies MIO heart rate watch from Sears this weekend and took it back the next day. I used it on my elliptical to compare calories used to see if it was accurate. The watch said I burned 30 calories when I know I burned more like 400. I bought it for the purpose of tracking calories burned and it was very inaccurate. For $80 I expect a little more! I am hesitant to get one with the chest strap because I don't know if I could work out with it on.
Anyone using one with a chest strap, does it get in the way?0 -

Do you wear a bra? Then you can wear a chest strap.. it's the same thing basically.0 -
I have a Polar FT4 and I love it. I just wanted somethign that would tell me how many calories i REALLY was burning and also tell me/keep me in my target /fat burning heart rate zone. This did the trick0

Another Polar FT4 lover here! Got it off Amazon for about $60. Best $ I've ever spent and now I refuse to workout without it!0
