Well after a good start I seem to have stalled :(

I have lost around 40lbs now and I'm really happy with but in the last 4 weeks its not working, I've gone up 2lbs lost 2lbs over and over.

My diet seems okay around 1400-1600 cals aday. Exercise is 2x 1000 cal work outs, cycling 40 miles and 2 hours of off road trial cycling a week

so what is going wrong ?

You may have hit a "set point"

As I understand it, when people gain weight, most people stop at certain weights for a while. That teaches your body that it is a level the body should stay. So when you are loosing weight and hit one of these "set points" on the way down, your body says, "Whoa buddy, this far and no further!" The body is sensing a famine in the land and is preserving fat.

I have heard different approaches to getting past a set point:

    1. Increase calories for a few days (100-300) which will supposedly convince your body that there is not a famine.
    2. Increase exercise
    3. Just hang in there long enough for your body to give in.

I am not an expert, so you may want to do some research on this yourself

WOW ... Congratulations, by the way! That is NOT just a good start, that is GREAT.
