Mixing up the walking routine

Last night I was out for a walk (over-indulged) and found myself doing short sprints lightpole to lightpole, then walking for 2-3 to cool down, and repeating.

On my way home I saw someone in the distance-looked like she was jumping on a pogo stick. When I got closer I saw she was walking sideways, like a gallop, or skip but with everything turned to the side. It looked silly and fun, so of course I had to try it. It was fun and got different muscles working-I could feel my glutes/outer thighs burning after just a few minutes.

Since it was dark enough that I wouldn't be recognized I decided to continue being silly on the walk home and mixed it up with skipping and I even bunny-hopped for a while. I felt so silly but giddy and happy too. I felt I should be in a Monty Python skit. It was a good walk.

Does anyone else mix up their walking by adding in something a little different? What do you do?

I sometimes turn around and walk/jog backwards. Works the fronts of my thighs more than regular walking. Never tried bunny hopping or running sideways, might have to try that.

I haven't recently, but I know that several years ago when I used to do the Leslie Sansone videos, the "walking" there would include all sorts of oddities including kicks and side steps etc. They all seemed to work well at the time.

I sometimes do that, but as you said -- feel really silly. If the path looks quiet I'll do it more. Skipping really gets my heart rate jumping. Walking backwards works other parts of your legs; walking sideways to. Other times I come across steps and run up and down them a few times and continue walking. More ideas, do jumping jacks for a minute and continue walking, or find a ledge/big step and step up and down for a minute. Walk w/ long strides or lunges (hard!!)

Great ideas so far! Love the Wizard of Oz idea. My kids are just silly enough to go for it.
