Just ate healthy - no tracking and only ate when hungry and succeed? I am thinking of trying it - small portions not calculate what I ate but just eat healthy when hungry ..Does this make sense would it work?

I guess it might work for some people. On the weekends I don't eat much becauseI am engaged but all week at my desk I feel hungry all the time, probably because I don't have much to do. bordem leads to snacking.

I have done portion control for years and have maintained and lost weight doing that.

You could try it and see. If I'm not tracking, I tend to eat less than I should most of the time, with some occaisional big splurges. That does nothing for my metabolism or weight loss.

I tried that from January through July. I lost 14 pounds, so not fast loss by any stretch. I'm doing much better now that I am paying more attention. Conversely, though, if you have been tracking for a while and go to this method, you might have better luck since you've presumably learned how to eat. I'd like to eat that when it comes time for maintenance. I know some people plan to track forever, I am hoping that won't be necessary.

then i'd have no use for mfp. honestly when i finally got my scale i realized that my estimations of a proper portion were too small and i was depriving my body of much needed calories.

I'm sure some people could be quite successful with that. I cannot. I am too good at tricking myself into thinking I ate more or less than I really did. For me, if I stop weighing everyday or stop tracking what I eat, I just know I'm gonna gain weight. And I'm not letting that happen ever again.

I'm tracking loosely... I found that counting every single friggin' calorie was making me an OCD mental case that could only think of food every single second... this ended up having a reverse effect and I gained. Now I'm eating when I'm hungry, making a sound choice, but not necessarily logging every calorie. I'm feeling much better and I'm not having weird sudden needful cravings anymore, which I seemed to experience when I was calculating every calorie.

This is me I know its bad when my 6 year old was reading his corndog and telling me how many calories is in it LOL! That is why I keep thinking maybe tracking Loosely would be the way to go for me just make healthier choices
  • That's pretty much what a "normal" eater does their whole live, aka a person who has never had weight issues. Unfortunately I think I work better when I count my calories, because I tend to underestimate a lot... and forget about snacking.

Being aware is definitely a good thing, it's astonishing somethings that are out there that you'd never guess the calories were so high (or other terrible things for that matter) I once almost bought a Chicken Empada wrap that looked amazing... it was 1100 calores!! This is what people are grabbing for quick lunches at work. Yikes!! I found that when I was getting to being over my daily goal, I had a very irrational "oh well if I'm going to be over anyway" and the rest of the day did even worse... terrible knee-jerk reaction, not all is lost just because your not bang on a caloric goal. I'm much happier not obsessing now, but still very aware of what my choices are.

It's my goal to eventually eat that way. I'm easing my way into it, following a "don't track all foods" method simular to the Core/Simply Filling Technique of Weight Watchers.

It can be done, but it is tough to learn to listen to those hunger signals, after a lifetime of ignoring them!

I only track periodically when my portions/calorie balance gets out of wack. Ive had good luck, but not sure i could go a year without tracking at all.

I never track my food. I find it rather annoying and frustrating! I just eat as healthy as I can and keep working out. It has worked so far!
