My mini reality check:

So, I thought I'd look over my dairy and review what I typically go over in. It's sugar! The biggest culprit? My Granny Smith apples I have as a snack. The smaller one (only 55 cals) is 11g of sugar!! Not fair! :noway: So, after eating the rest of what I have at home this week, I'm saying NO MORE!

With that said, I'll take any and all suggestions for healthier, unrefridgerated, "single serve" snacks!

Thanks in advance!
Manda

I had the same issue. I wouldn't junk the apples, as they're so good for you in so many ways. Just cut down.

Everyone Ive talked to says, its ok to go over in sugar... if you do so by eating fruits. Dont eat 5 apples, but one a day is good for you, and its natural sugar.

Carrot sticks?? I love those. Also baby tomatoes - although I have a sneaking suspicion that they also have a high-ish sugar content..!! My new favourite though is a chunk of cucumber. Eat it from the chunk, like you would eat an apple. Very refreshing!!
  • Maybe I am not the one to judge because I have a serious sugar problem myself but I do not think that cutting out a very healthy snack option is a good idea. Apples are full of healthy fibre and nutrients and are fairly low in calories. They are also a great way to cut cravings for other sugary snacks like chocolate. I think a better option would be to not worry about natural sources of sugar such as fruit and just worry about processed, less healthy sugars. What were you thinking of replacing the apples with? Veggies are great to cut the sugar but don't replace them with artificial sweeteners because they have been proven to increase cravings and will only set you back. I would say keep the apples but if you choose not to, just be careful what you replace them with.

natural sugar is not really what you should be concerned with. The added sugars in processed foods is the problem. Not eating apples because of the sugar is a little like cutting off your nose to spite your face. Apples have a lot of vitamins and antioxidants in them, not to mention they are a good source of natural fiber. That is just my take though.

Unless you really need to control blood sugar levels then don't worry too much about fruit sugars. I'm sure the fruit's doing you enough good to outweigh the sugar.

I try to avoid too much "added sugar" but am not going to give up fruit most of which has a pretty high amount of sugar in.

    cheers

since most of my sugar infact is from fruit (and i don't eat more than 2 (occasionally 3) servings of fruit a day at a maximum, , i don't worry about the sugar at all (but then i am not diabetic so have no real need to worry about it).

i don't use any sweeteners either other than the occasional drizzle of honey or maple syrup, but that use is rare, so most of my sugars are coming from the whole (healthy) foods i eat, so is all good to me.

Obviously that varies per person of course, but for me it's fine.

Thanks for all of your quick replies!

I targeted apples because while reviewing my dairy it was the single item that had the most sugar. After your helpful hints, I won't cut apples out entirely, but I will cut back a little. I was thinking of replacing them other fruits or maybe with veggies...

See, I learn something new everyday! Thanks! :drinker:

I was shocked, also to find out that the fresh fruits that I love and have been told to eat as part of my diabetic diet are so high in sugars. My snacks now consist of almonds, 100 calorie pop secret popcorn, or sugar free jello if you have a refrigerator handy.
