I put a lot of effort into a project, I volunteered to take on at work. It was an ad to recruit volunteer to our agency for the next training. They distributed the flyer today and NOTHING is the same except the contact information for the volunteer coordinator, which obviously can not change.

How do you respond nicely to and email that says "I hope I haven't stepped on your toes..."

Insert several cuss words here.

    I know how that goes.

I'm a developer at a small startup, and tried to implement a bug tracking system. Getting people to use it is like pulling teeth. Now, **** has been hitting the fan due to the very communication issues I was trying to preemptively solve with said tracker, and now, our project coordinator has decided to use a different system that does pretty much the same thing...

He was sympathetic to my feelings when I mentioned about the one I found, and agreed that we need one, but hasn't said much beyond that yet. It still irks me, though, especially knowing that I had seen this coming, but our boss had actively stopped us from using my solution, and now we're all paying for it.

I'm a very proactive person and would rather resolve the problem before it occurs....so I could understand the frustration of that for sure!
  • God that is hard. There is nothing I hate more than people shooting down my ideas. I also do not take criticism well...AT ALL!!! In this situation, it will probably do no good to say anything. I wouldn't volunteer for anything else after this if it were me.

Exactly....my feelings are....if you could have done a "better" job yourself....then do it yourself.

The think is, I consulted a person with marketing experience. The volunteer coordinator doesn't have any...so to be on the ad looks like **** now.

If there's one thing I can't stand, it's someone asking for my opinion and then doing the exact opposite. Honestly I don't know how I'd respond to the situation. I'm known for forgetting to load my brain before I shoot my mouth and would probably get myself into major trouble
  • Welcome to my world, actaully most of my colleagues are often working on projects that aren't really related to our day jobs. It can be incredibly frustrating to put in the effort and then not see a lot of it used, if it happens often enough to you, you'll get used to it.

There's no harm in politely asking why your material wasn't used, especially if you intend to take it as constructive feedback, but only if you really want to learn from it. Take the feedback as a learning that will help ensure you're on the right track next time.

It wasn't used because they wanted to load it with information and mine was short & sweet. Oh. well.
