Hi everyone,

I am really struggling to lose weight. I gained 11lb while I was on depo provera, before depo I was always a constant weight of 48kgs. I'm 161cm tall and currently weigh anywhere between 52.5kgs and 53kgs.

A week ago I got down to 52kgs but this week the scales are saying I am back at 53kgs. I haven't done anything different to the week before I have even increased my exercise.

I struggle to get to 1200 calories a day and I am eating the same I always have even before the depo.

I know it could still be the depo in my system messing with hormones etc but I am after some advice. I just want to lose the extra fat I gained on my stomach sometimes I wonder if it is water weight but I'm not sure. I no depo does make you retain water.

I'm booking an appointment with the doctor next week because it is starting to get me really down.

Thanks

sounds to me like you arent getting enough calories! may sound strange, but your body is crying out for food, and is grabbing hold of anything you happen to feed it and holding on for all its worth!
you have to start eating better. more protein, plenty of veg and fruit (i personally think veg is better than fruit for nutrition, but fruit is very important too. eat loads of green leafy stuff, the darker the better, and things like peppers. the more colour, for some reason, the better they seem to be. i heard that somewhere, but dont quote me!), wholegrains, good carbs, like sweet potato, baked beans even, other types of beans and lentils and stuff, drink loads of water, get as much exercise as you can. im not an expert of the nutrition side, so i will just stop at what i DO know without trying to fill in all the blanks.

If you struggle to eat 1200 calories a day, AND you're exercising, you NET calories are into starvation range, so it's no wonder you've stopped losing weight. By all means see your doctor, but he'll probably tell you to eat more. If you're worried about doing that, please read my blog (link below) as I was too.

It's normal for your weight to fluctuate on a day to day basis (that's part of the reason why I only weigh myself once a week). When you weigh, I would measure also (sometimes there will be no change in weight but you lose inches and the clothes fit better). If you exercise and gain muscle mass, it weighs more than fat does. Monthly water retention could be a factor. Your caloric intake may be either too much or too little depending on your situation.

I hope this gives you some ideas on directions in which to look.

Looking at your stats, it would seem that you're already at a very healthy bmi. This means your body isn't going to give up any more pounds willingly, and indeed, you should ask yourself it is wise to pursue this. Check this with your doctor.

If it's shape you're concerned about, then ignore the scale, and do some toning exercises.

Losing weight is a long term thing and as has been suggested you will see weekly variations. If you run with the programme long enough you may see patterns develop in the up and down-ness on your weight loss graph and, when you reach goal weight you may also see a regular fluctuation. That is all ok.

I put your details into the BMR calculator and see that your BMR is probably between 1200-1300. This means that depending on your life style you could need to eat maybe 1000 or more calories to actually lose weaight. Sounds crazy, but it it is true! Plug your numbers into the system and if it says eat X number of calories to lose Y kg, just do what it says and give it time.

    Good luck!
