Hi,

I'm really struggling. Since joining MFP and about 1 month before that, I have been losing and gaining the same three pounds over and over. I am terrible for weighing myself every day, before and after runs etc and am trying to cut back to weighing myself to monday and fridays. Even with this the results are still the same....the same three pounds...off...then on......

To be totally honest i dont always eat the right foods but i found if i cut my favourites out totally all i can do is think about them and crave them. I eat around 1500-1600 calories a day but that includes exercise calories of around 300-400 from running 5k a day.

I dont understand, if you looked at me 6 months ago i was eating a lot more and didnt do any exercise than the odd circuit training my husband dragged me to. Even if i was eating the same as then but doing the running i do now, surely doesnt that equate to some weight loss. I'm cutting down on food too so WHATS GOING ON!!!!

I've been to see two different doctors over this time (concerning other things) but had a quick chat to each about weight loss. One said that doctors dont generally go on BMI any more but waist measurement. He measured mine and it was 87cm. A healthy waist is below 81cm. so all he said was yes you could do with losing a little weight. No other advice...

The second doctor told me not to worry about my size as i dont look overweight but to concentrate on feeling fit. Which to be honest, i do. I've really began to love running again and usually cant wait to finish work to go and run off my day.

Sorry for the winge but what are your weight losses and how long has it taken you? I really need some motivation.

I even tried wearing my HRM for 24 hours. It told me i burned 2100 cals. That was a standard day at work and no exercise. Soooooooo doing the maths

2100 minus 1600 = 500
500 x 7 days = 3500 (1 lb loss)
Ive been at this just over 2 months

Where is my 8lb loss!!!!! (I scream) :-)

Ok, i'm going to stop ranting now and go back to the pleasant women i used to be.

Any help any one can offer would be totally appreciated.

thanks xx

    Open your diary up
(and to answer your question, i lost a stone in the first month of joining MFP but my starting weight was in the obese category on the BMI scale, is your weight close to normal?)

I believe your caloried deficit takes into account what calories you eat and burn to maintain your weight. I know you are counting your caloreis burned in average daily living. I wouldnt do tthat. I would only count what I do above that...extra activity. Also make your diary open and people can look at what you are eating and help you out.
  • Just opened up my dairy. I dont tend to keep it up to date 100% but it will give you an idea. I generally do my calorie counting in my head.

    Thanks
  • When i started my weight was

    166lb (11st 12lbs)

    Lowest it has been

    162.4 (11st 8.6lb)

    This morning

    165.6lb (11st 9.6lb)

hmm, lots of sugary snacks and chocolate! where's the fruit and veg? and good fats & water???

Head counting calories is not the MFP way either, you need to log everything (at least that is what has been working for me)

you don't need to lose a lot of weight either, which will be harder to achieve than someone (like me) who had a lot in the first place!
  • I kind of thought that as long as i didn't go overboard on calories, that i could eat what i wanted. (even chocolate, my second love)

I eat veg or salad with my evening meal and when i'm good and prepare my salad in the evening ready for the next day.

I suppose i could swap a few of the things i eat for fruit.

Thanks for looking :-) and well done in your weight loss

There is a school of thought that this is true but it doesnt appear to be working for you so try something different until you find what works for you. Personally lots of fruit / veg / nuts and abstaining from sugary snacks / chocolate / crisps is what has been working for me "courses for horses" so to speak. good luck <3

i agree with the other poster, there is a lot of chocolate and sweets in the few days i looked at. there is quite a lot of information about the quality of calories on the forums. its sadly not just a case of a calorie is a calorie. 200 cals of chocolate gives u no nurtitional value, whereas 200 cals of veg & meal gives you loads. i like chocolate, so i have cadburys light mousse (60 cals) or mini packs of anumal biscuits (omg, so yummy!!!!) and i save 'proper' chocolate as a treat, not something to have every day.

I lost 14 pounds in 3 months. which was my goal and i am now maintaining.

from the looks of it, you just need to tweak your diet a bit, maybe aim for your 5 a day? as u have the exercise covered!

And are you not logging your water or not drinking any?? this is as important as food for the weight loss to be effective.

I can't speak for everyone, but I can definitely relate. I join this program when my mom told me about it over the phone. She is definitely one of those already too skinny people that think they need to lose more weight. When she started the program she weighted 128-130 and now she weighs 115. She did it in 2-3 months.... so I thought if she can do it so can I.

I have been on the program now for about a month. I lost 2 lbs in the first week. Originally I started with a calorie count of 1600 per day just to get the hang of things and I figured I would be happy on a steady decrease. Plus, I thougth it would be more long term if I worked on a lifestyle change versus just another diet. After the second week of not losing any weight, I decide to lower my calorie count to 1300 a day. Even at that with moderate exercise, I struggled with losing another pound. Finally, this week I showed a weight lose of another 3 lbs.

I guess 5 lbs for one month isn't bad, but I have to admit I was pretty discouraged because I was comparing my weight loss to my mom. I have to realize that we are all not built the same. I have struggled with weight my whole life. I have gone from one extreme (being size 0) to the other extreme (being size 16). I have abused my body so much. I would go 3 days without eating and working out 1-2 hrs a day just to try and feel happy with myself. Then I started having kids and realized it was not all about me. I went from working out all the time to not working out at all. I began to just do for my kids. I have never been good at eating set meals a day; I often skip meals inbetween (which I know is not good).

The last few years I have realized I need to be healthy for my kids sake so I have begun to train myself to eat right and started working out again... here and there. My body has been so abused from the years that I will actually gain weight if I begin to get back into the pattern of not eating 3 meals a day. My metabolism is shot and now I have to begin to retrain my body. Doctors and dietians are no help. I have talked to many and they all have different theories and solutions. I finally realize that God made me the way that I am and I have to like myself first before I can be anything else. I am working hard to lose weight to be healthy, not to be a supermodel, and my healthy may be different from someone else's healthy.

Ditch the chocolate. Ditch the sugar in the morning and the rice k. cereal. Try maybe some fruit with Greek yogurt instead or switch cereals. I see a lot of processed food. That might be a culprit of why you are not losing weight. Might want to incorporate a lot of fresh fruit/veggies into your diet.

Also, you might want to try logging every single day. You might have days that you have gone over your calorie limits without even knowing! Make it a habit to log every single thing you put into your mouth!
  • Thank you for your comments and advice.

I think i need to have another look at what i'm eating. maybe say good bye to some bit and bobs.

    thanks
