BMR stands for "Basal Metabolic Rate" and is the amount of calories you would burn in a day if you were in a coma. It's the caloric need of your body to fuel things like breathing and pumping blood.

1200 is a bare minimum estimate. It's not a number that's meant for everyone, but it is the number which most experts agree is the absolute lowest you can reduce your intake safely. But again, because it is an estimate it may be too low for you. MFP has it as a default lowest setting, so unless you manually change it, you will not go lower than this as a calorie goal.

I personally used my BMR to guide my net calorie goal as I was losing. So my BMR was at about 1340, my net calories were at about 1350 (so 1350+what I would burn in exercise).

I think upping your calories, slowly, may be of use to you. Add about 100 calories/day to your goal each week (so 1200 is this week, next week have 1300 each day, then 1400) up to about 1500-1600. Then drop back down to 1300/1350. Since your body is currently used to making do with 1200 calories, this method helps it adjust to using more calories (which go no higher than maintenence and will not make you gain) and making your deficit have more of an impact when you reduce your calories again.
