How accurate are calorie counters on machines?

I typically use the elliptical at the gym and I like it because it counts the calories that I burn...or does it? How accurate are those things anyways? Sometimes I leave the gym thinking I burned 800 calories, but I'm barely breaking a sweat. Any answers??
Thanks!
Thanks!

They give you a rough estimate, but they are far from accurate.
Most people say that they over estimate your caloric burn, but after receiving my heart rate monitor, I've found that it was UNDER estimating mine!
My mother has found thought that it does over estimate hers. The best way to tell is to get a heart rate monitor, I'm SO glad that I did!!0 -
i found this website and i love it. you just enter your weight and choosee your activity and how long you did it. not sure how accurate it is but it was pretty close to what my machine said.
