Weight lifting - to glove or not to glove?

I don't have gloves, but I've been thinking about them because sometimes my hands get sweaty on the bar in my BodyPump classes, and with the skinny bar they just start to slide a little. I just don't know. So do you glove or not? And why?

Speaking of which, other than a good pair of sneakers, workout clothes, a hrm, and maybe an ipod what other "equipment" do you use to help with your workout and why?

  • I don't. They are an uneccessary PITA in my opinion. I have a couple of bar calluses on my hands but that's it.

I think it's really just personal preference. I tried gloves a few years back and I felt like the bar was slipping out of my hands, so I go barehanded. Just figure out what's best and most comfortable for you. :)

I love my new iPod Nano. It's so small and I can clip it to my shirt and it's out of the way. Shoes are all personal preference, I like my Nikes but I'm considering some new Adidas.

I used to think they were not needed... and still do, for the most part, however, with that being said:

Once you start lifting HEAVY weights, they can really tear up your hands. I constantly have callouses on my hands, and every so often the top layer of them will pull off.

It just makes your hands a little rough is all.

As far as shoes go: Stick with someone without a lot of padding. You want as stable of a heel as you can get, preferably close to the ground. PADDED RUNNING SHOES ARE BAD FOR LIFTING. It throws your balance off and when you are lifting heavy weights in workouts like deadlifts and squats, it can push you onto your toes, which strains your back.

Barefoot running shoes are what I use to lift in, they keep me balanced and flat on the floor.

I use the gloves because I don't like developing callouses on the ridge at the top of my palms.

Gloves are bad. Gloves add thickness to what you have to grip which lowers your grip strength. If slipping is an issue, just use chalk or liquid calk.

I use them for certain excercises, and others I take them off. My hands were getting shredded with some heavier weights and had to use them. Like everyone is saying though, it's all personal preference.

I like to "feel" the bar, so no gloves for me if I don't have to. On occasion I'll wear them on heavy curls or benches, but only because the weight grinds the knurling into my palms.

Other equipment I have are a weight lifting belt, lifting straps, and knee wraps for really heavy squats.

Haha, I like to keep my calk hard, not liquid.

Oh wait, not a dirty thread. Continue.

    I wear gloves. If I don't I get some man calluses that I can't appreciate :)

Same here - I wear them to prevent calluses. If they cause slippage, get the ones that have leather in the palm or some other type of gripping.

I also have my HRM with chest strap and music/headphones - kinda essential unless you like listening to grunts or people talking about football.

I'm buying gloves ASAP because my hands are starting to get calluses and I do not like having rough hands. If that makes me a girly girl, so be it. :)

LOL - It's ok until they start yelling about it... or someone thinks they are an expert and all of the sudden the room becomes full of experts. lol

This is funny. I just looked down at my hands and realized i have calluses, and now I'm having an internal debate about whether or not that bothers me . . .

    Chalk.

Calluses from weight lifting are sexy.
  • I have ridiculously sweaty hands (all the time) so gloves are a must... I really should wear them doing every day activities as well.

I gave up on gloves. I found they weren't necessary for me as I already have calluses, plus the leather gave me rashes all the time. But it comes down to personal preference really.

I like gloves when lifting weight. Otherwise I get bad calluses under my fingers.

My opinion for women, wear gloves unless you're lifting heavy. Coming from a guy, a woman with rough hands isn't comfortable during sexy time. I never wear gloves though, I chalk up like crazy for deadlifts and heavy dumbbell work.

When I got calluses I was pretty proud of them, until my husband was holding my hand and he commented on how rough they were. He went out and bought me gloves the next day. I have gotten used to them and now really like them. They give me a little padding on the bar and keep my hands a little softer and nicer to hold.
