Is Honesty REALLY the best policy?

I believe honesty is always the best policy, but I know sometimes I keep little things to myself because of the consequences that may fall back on me. Should I ..no, but I'm human.0

Funny how age can give you wisdom. When I was younger (20's and 30's), I believed in "honesty all the time" to the point of being brutally honest at times. I look back and wish I could have said things differently to spare some feelings. So, now that I'm a little older, I still believe honesty is the best policiy, and any lie is a sin. However, there are times when the truth needs to be "filtered". I'm not sure that I would believe anyone who says they never lie.
so true. thanks Patti for the voice of reason once again.0 -
Santa Claus, Easter Bunny and Tooth Fairy are great lies. Oh, and when I need a day off.0

It is never okay to lie. However honesty is never the best policy. No one really wants you to be honest. If they are asking your opinion, what the want is you to make them feel better. If they are asking for your advice, what they really want is an accomplice.0

The only time I ever "lie" is if I'm trying to surprise someone with something, and they ask me questions like, "What are you doing today?" then I will just leave out the bit about surprising them. I don't really think that's the bad kind of lying though. It's beneficial to the other person
but I am not one of those brutally honest people. I am honest, but I know how to word things to spare feelings if need be. If someone asks for my opinion though, they're getting the non-filtered opinion.

Sometimes is very important to lie, like when you are carrying something wrapped up in a plastic tarp and duct tape, and the police ask you what it is.....................then its probobly best to lie0

Being "honest" is different than having integrity.
We all use social "filters" when dealing with people - "how are you?" "Fine, thanks" -- first person doesn't care, second person doesn't wish to share. However, we do the social interaction dance because this is what nice people do. We all understand that it is a ritual, and not a measure of how honest we are.
Can others count on you to keep your word?
Are you open and available in your relationships?
Do you handle finances responsibly?
This is integrity.
No, those pants don't make you look fat. Your butt is fat. The fit of those pants, however, can make it look better or worse. Most people understand that the question, and the answer, is not about the butt - it's about the effect.
And let's be brutally honest here -- muffin tops NEVER, EVER look good. If you have one, buy bigger pants already.0 -
I hate it when people lie! Ugh, my biggest pet peeve. I mean, obviously you can't be truthful 100% of the time. For example if your kid asks you something & you don't know the answer, you make something up, lol.
I do not lie, I try to always be truthfull & speak my mind. Some peoole have issues with that but I don't care. I'd rather have someone say it to me than go behind my back. That hurts a lot more0 -
Come on, do any of us really believe anyone who says they have "never" lied?0

And I believe you! :happy:0 -
i lie to my kids about stuff and though its hypocritical I dont care. Im not telling them the truth about Santa or the Tooth Fairy until they figure it out on their own. My daughter did that last year and she has been warned if she blows the whistle on either to her little brother she will have dog poop duty for the entire neighborhood.
Other than that, if you ask me I will tell you. I have co-workers that actually come to me cause they know i will give them the truth. I want people to do the same to me.
Dont lie to me so that you wont hurt my feelings. If we cant be honest with one another whats the point?
Tact isn't always my strong suit, but I try not to be mean, but I am blunt.I expect the same in return.
People who know me always know just where I stand and don't ask me questions to answers they don't really want to hear.0 -
Do you feel that it's ever ok to tell a lie? .....no
What if the truth will hurt the person? ....im sorry i wlll tell you the truth with tough love
What if it's just a "little white lie"? ...unacceptable
Under what circumstance would a lie be justifiable? ......still unacceptable
my opinion:as a child yes i lied to get out of trouble but now that i am a woman there is not need to lie, dont ask me if you want to be lied to.
and eventually that person is going to find out the truth, the truth always comes out, THAT YOU CAN BET YOUR BOTTOM DOLLAR ON.0 -
Lying is never an option for me. I do not have to be hateful, but I must be truthful. If you don't want my honest opinion, don't ask me for my opinion. LOL0
