What the Heck!!!

I joined MFP about 7 weeks ago and was doing great until this morning.... I gained 2 lbs back. I know this could be a number of thing like water weight or maybe muscle? I know that I should not be discouraged by this but honestly I am a little disapointed in myself. It really sucked having to add lbs to my CW when I checked in this week instead of subtracting them. I stay below what I should be eating in calories a day and walk 3 miles every other day with a little joging thrown in along the way( when my shins will allow it) and also started riding my bike twice a week when im not walking. Maybe I just need to change things up a little? What ever the case is I just needed to vent my frustration I know by reading alot of everyones posts that this is sometimes to be expected and I will not let it get me down its just a whole lot easier to stay motivated when the scale is going down instead of up.

  • Don't worry about it too much! I've seen my weight flucuate by 2+ pounds between back-to-back days. The body's a funny thing sometimes.

There was a blog (?) post a bit back that I wish I'd bookmarked now, but the lady graphed her daily weight so she could visulize the flucuations (and see that despite the flucuations there was an overall decline of weight).
I personally like that idea and have been doing that with a bit of a twist. Actual weight tracked vs. the daily "if every day were like today you would weigh X in 5 weeks"... I'm curious to see if that estimate is even remotely accurate. Although I find it funny that my 5-weeks-out weight projection is flucuating more than my actual weight. I'm sure that'll change the longer I do this :)

So keep up the good work (7 weeks going strong! Congrats!) and don't let a little flucuation discourage you!

It's likely water weight. Perhaps you ate a bit too much sodium in the last few days (start tracking your sodium if you're not doing it already) and didn't drink enough water to offset it? Did you just start working out in the last couple of weeks? Getting active or changing/adding an activity will cause the muscles to retain water as part of the healing process but this will be released once your body gets used to the change - takes up to two weeks. Or it could be hormonal.

Wanted to comment on your shin splints too even though you didnt' ask about it... I have that trouble from time to time when I push myself too hard walking and try to take longer strides. If you're having this pain, try slowing it down a bit. Also, when you run, take a shorter stride and make sure you're landing on the middle or ball of your foot.
