I love reading to my son and was curious what are some of your favourite children's books? I love the book "On the Night you were born", God Gave Us You (a great book you can personalize by adding your child's name/dr's name etc), Good Night Moon, How Much Do you Love me

What are your favourites?

My absolute favorite was Gold Bug. I have no idea what the titles were, but it was a series of books, kind of like "Where's Waldo." You had to look at these crazy busy pictures and find the gold bug. I adored it. There was a story with it, but I was always more interested in finding the gold bug before my mom did.

My boys and I like reading: "May I Please Have A Cookie?", "The Gingerbread Man", "Junie B Jones and the Mushy Gushy Valentine" and "The Goodnight Book".

When I was little, my favorites were: "I Can't Said the Ant", "My Cat Likes to Hide in Boxes", "Butterball", "Owl at Home" and the poem "The Highwayman"

    :)
  • If you haven't already, check out Chris Van Allsburg...I love his drawing style.

I like to read "go the f**k to sleep," by Adam Mansbach. Once my son starts cursing, I'll have to stop of course, and have a rather lot of explaining to do.

Naaa...it's totally appropriate for kids to cuss. Gives them character. Makes them more fun. *wink*

That's a great book. And I'll be the first to admit, I cry every time I read it.

    My favorites:
Sam McBratney's Guess How Much I Love You
Mo Willems' Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus (and all the others are great too!)
Julia Donaldson's The Gruffalo (although I honestly like the german version better than the English, but that doesn't help any English speakers, I guess).

"The Velveteen Rabbit." An amazing story about love, physical appearances, and acceptance.

I read that to both my girls, now 21 and 14. Our little neighbor girl brought it to me to read recently and I cried. I love the Little Critter books and If You Give a Mouse a Cookie.

    I'll love you forever,
    I'll like you for always,
    As long as I'm living,
    My baby you'll be.

    I love good picture books.

"Where the Wild Things Are" by Maurice Sendak is a favorite from my own childhood.

"I Love You Forever" by Robert Munsch makes me tear up every time I read it.

"Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day" by Judith Viorst is another favorite from my childhood.

I also like all the different versions of the Cinderella story from all over the world. 2 that stick out in my mind are

"Cendrillon: A Caribbean Cinderella" by Robert D. San Souci and "Smoky Mountain Rose: An Appalachian Cinderella" by Alan Schroeder. Both are written in dialect, making them fun to read aloud, and both have amazing, but very different illustrations.

I like all of Sandra Boynton's books ("Birthday Monsters", "Hippos Go Beserk," "Snuggle Puppy"). They're hilarious, and younger kids love them.

I also love any Shel Silverstein -- "Runny Babbitt" cracks us up every time.

With my older son, we made our way through all the E.B. White favorites ("Charlotte's Web", "Stuart Little" and "Trumpet of the Swan") and the "SuperFudge" series because he could relate to having an (annoying) younger brother. His dad's reading him Harry Potter now, and that's pretty cool, too.

I'm going to read him "Island of the Blue Dolphins" by Scott O'Dell soon -- it was my favorite book when I was young b/c it was about a faraway place and a faraway people, and the lead character was a very brave girl who tries to save her brother when they're stranded alone on an island.
