Idk where I heard this so I really want to know what y'all think....

I heard that when training on a treadmill you should set the incline @ 3 to mimic the out of doors.

True? False?

I did it today and was dying at the end of my workout....can really feel it in my glutes...

I heard it should be more of 1-1.5.

Idk if it's true...but I switch off between these...

    Incline, 3, Speed, 4
    Incline 10, Speed, 4
    Incline 1.5, Speed, 6

True that it should be on an incline. Running on it flat is like running downhill all the time. I'm not sure if 3% is the right number or not - but yes, it should be on a small incline to mimic the outdoors. I usually put mine on 2%.

I agree with the switching inclines. It hits different muscles then.

Here you go. This article states at least 1%, not 3.

yes it is true because when you just run on a treadmill you are doing nothing more then picking your feet up and down and the treadmill is doing all the work. If you did the same motion out side you would be running in place. So when you set the incline up then your legs have to work harder to keep you on the treadmill. This is the same motion that pushes your body forward when you run outside. I found this out the hard way when I was training solely on a treadmill. I was running an 8 minute mile and would run for three miles. I was feeling pretty good about myself and was even talking it up to people at work. I went running with one of them outside on the track and could barely go 1 mile before I was done. That is when I figured out that you have to give yourself the incline. Sorry but it is true.

Yes I've heard 1-1.5% mimics the outdoors. I vary my incline going all the way up, it engages the core and glutes more, working you harder thus burning more calories in the same amount of time. My @ss has never looked this good!! :)

I have the opposite issue when it comes to running on the treadmill. I can run outside so much faster and feels easier. Even doing hills. I am so slow when I am on the treadmill. It feels like such a chore if I have to run indoors. Maybe being outdoors takes my mind off the hard work because the scenery changes.

Yeah, I agree with all these peeps. I can run like the wind on the treadmill but outside...Ha! It's like jr. high again and I'm clutching a stitch in my side and wheezing like a fat kid trying to take the stairs. I do not however set the incline at 3...yikes! I set it at .5 or 1 and it is a little hard, it's also better on the knees too.

i've heard that treadmill with no incline is like going down hill...

i always use an incline of 8 on the treadmill, but that is for my knees. i get really sore knees, but the incline helps. Sure, i have to go slower, but my knees don't hurt, and i can jog with an incline, but on the flat, my joints just kill me for some strange reason.

I am the same way - I enjoy running outside so much more and find it easier --- but I think it's because the changing scenery takes my mind off the fact I'm running when it seems the only thing I think about on the treadmill is the fact I am running.
