Hi guys!
I recently found out that i have iron deficiency anemia, I have been getting iron shots, eating heaps of beef and green leafy veges ( love that i have an excuse to eat steak all the time!! haha) and thats been working pretty well.
My question is apart from vitamin c does anyone know what else helps iron absorption??
Is there any foods that stop iron absorption?
I have done some research about it but all that did was confuse me more!!haha! so any help would be appreciated

Hi, Karyn! I'm also iron deficient and I'm an RN. Here's a few things to keep in mind:
- for every 10-20 mg of iron consumed, only about 1mg is absorbed
- Other iron rich foods include: beef, pork, lamb, liver, and other organ meats, chicken, duck, turkey, liver (especially dark meat), shellfish, sardines, anchovies, leafy greens of the cabbage family, such as broccoli, kale, turnip greens, and collards, lima beans and green peas; dry beans and peas, such as pinto beans, black-eyed peas, and canned baked beans
- the best thing to pair iron-rich foods with is Vitamin C foods like blueberries, raspberries, guava, papayas, pineapple, kiwifruit, tangerines, oranges, tomatoes, parsley, and chili peppers, potatoes, sweet potatoes, cabbage, corn, peas and Brussels sprouts.
Hope that helps!0 -
Don't drink tea when eating your greens! It actually stops the absorption of the iron you need from them...
I was diagnosed with iron deficiency anemia, in 2008...It took 3 months to get them back up to acceptable levels and almost a year to get them to 12...I had dropped to a 4.
I got B12 shots twice, High doses of iron supplements as well as from the foods...I still take to this day: 1 prenatal vitamin, 1-2 B12 @ 500mcg, 1000mg Vit. C..per day along with my Calcium/D3.....
After a certain amt of time, I had to lay off the iron because it started making me feel ill, which meant, I was getting plenty of iron.
As long as I eat right and take my vit. and supplements, I do great.....0 -

I take iron tablets...when I remember. Mainly when it's TOM..I get run down really fast..Good Luck!0

yeah I will eventually have to iron tablets, at the moment i'm on the injections to get me to an acceptable level.....but iron can stain the skin........so now i look like ive been kicked in the *kitten* by a sumo wrestler!! haha!0

Kinda sucks. I take tablets three times a day and do occasional IV infusions when I really bottom out. And the previous poster was right - TOM really drains me of all energy.0

Calcium will block iron absorption so don't eat your meat with a glass of milk.0
