Necessary Diet Fats

I just want to put out there that fat does not make you fat or overweight. I hate when people use 'fat' for fat people because I just think that may be where the misconception that fats make you fat comes from because people thing 'oh, fat, that must make you fat,' and it is just not true at all. If you eat too many calories that is whats going to make you gain weight or make you overweight.
One way you're going to gain weight is if you eat too many calories for your maintenance level. You need about 3,500 calories to gain a pound, so that's a heck of a lot. For example, if you ate 500 extra calories a day than you would gain about a pound a week. You can take me for example. I eat so much fat in my diet. I am obsessed with nutbutters and nuts, those are my favorite sources. I also love avocado. And I eat a lot. I eat definitely a few servings daily. I eat nutbutter with almost every meal and snack. And I am not overweight and I have not gained weight.
That has actually helped me maintain my weight because it really helps with satiety. I feel fuller for longer and therefore I'm not eating excess calories. That is pretty essential. I think that a lot of people think that all you need is proteins; they try to go on low-carb diets, they try and go on low-fat diets, when carbs you need the most of (45 to 65%) and fat is second that you need most of, so they're trying to cut out the two macro nutrients that you need the most.
The only reason people think that fats make you overweight or they make you gain fat is because fats are high in calorie per value. Per gram you're going to get about nine calories. That's opposed to carbohydrates and proteins were you're going to get about four calories per gram. Fats are essential in your diet. You need about 25 to 35% of your calories from them. You need fats in your diet and I am a prime example of that. Fats will not make you overweight, they will not make you gain fat. They are actually delicious and tasty. I advise all of you right now to go grab a snack, my personal favorite being a banana with peanut butter on top, and enjoy it.

can I eat a tub of lard? I jest. I agree with this post. Fat is also good for helping with defining muscles. I'm good with that!0

but from reading the first couple of lines i would like to say that if i eat more than about 1,500 calories the next day i put on like 4 pounds.. that then takes weeks to loose.. =(

Yes, like saturated fats from grass-fed and pastured animal sources! Fat from grain-fed beef, for example, has a very unhealthy ratio of omega 6 to omega 3, but grass fed beef is much healthier. And egg yolks from farm fresh eggs. YUM!0 -

Oh yeah, I eat the whole egg. I just emphasized the yolk because so many people toss them out. THAT'S WHERE ALL THE HEALTHY STUFF IS!!! :laugh:0 -

my nutritionist looked at me like I was crazy when I told him I was eating egg whites, and I was SO proud. He asked WHY do you do that? Do you enjoy the egg whites? Or is it something else? I said because they're healthier.... His response *facepalm* laugh, ok, but not really. So, eat the egg, the WHOLE egg and cut your fat elsewhere, because while the whole egg is high in fat, it is not bad fat.0 -
Haha, I love your signature. The number of people on here complaining about not being able to eat 1200 calories makes me roll my eyes.0
-
But unfortunately most foods that are tasty are high in trans fat which is bad for our health.0

As a follow-up, I thought I would link to this really helpful post called "Fats: Which to Eat and Which to Ditch" http://balancedbites.com/2010/07/fats-which-to-eat-and-which-to-ditch.html0

Its true!
I weighed myself on a monday like i normally do.
That day i had a bad day, no time to exercise, no healthy food in, etc, etc..
So i ate about 1,800 calories..
And then after eating i got so like bloated..
And then the next day the like bloating was still there, but it was no longer like bloating it was like fat..
I went to the loo. (both kinds).
I then weighed myself and id put on 6 pounds!
I once put on 12 pounds after just 4 days of eating close to 2,000 calories.
Its just not fair!! ='(0 -

Sorry but your post made my eyes big :noway: Seriously how could you gain a lb. for just 500 excess calories? Maybe you don't watch out your sodium intake or you're underestimating your actual calorie consumption.0 -

I was thinking more like plant-based fats, such as nuts, avocado, olives, etc.0 -

I think we have very different definitions of "tasty".0 -

Those are also delicious. Nuts tend to have a lot of omega 6, though, so it isn't a great idea to go crazy on them (or so I have been told).0 -

Totally agree. Michael Pollen is good on the perils of the low-fat trend. He points out the average amount of fat in the American diet has fallen while obesity rates have risen steadily. In the 60s people used to eat around 40% fat (which is about what I hit these days). Yay fat!0

I'm sort of stuck with them (and other plant sources), though, as I only eat fish for meat and only for two meals a week.0 -

For every gram of carbohydrate you eat, you'll hold about 3-6 grams of water.
Moral of the story: Scale weight is a pretty useless estimate of how much fat/muscle your body has.0
