My lunch was low in fat carbs and calories (204kcals), but it tasted really salty (I don't normally have salt so I can taste it quite easy).

I've just checked and the lighter than light Mayo and the tuna steak contain 400+ sodium EACH. I'm shocked. Although saying that I've never counted salt as I've never added it to my food/cooking.

I've just read that we should be having a maximum of 500g sodium per DAY.
What happens to your body if you consume too much sodium?

Better go and drink some water, salt makes you really thirsty, plus I HAVE to get this nasty taste out of my mouth! It was so yummy at first until the next few bites. Waiting to start shaking and sweating  joking.

I guess 'light' foods do come at a price. It may be lower in fat or calories, but it'll be higher in something else to help 'keep' the food fresh.

Just try and keep your sodium below 2000mg a day, the less processed foods you eat the easier that is to do. I keep mine around 1000-1200 mg a day.

I assume you mean mg, but mfp has it set to 2500mg I think
  • Say the meal had 800mg in total - if this is not typical for your meals then you'll still end up for the day under 2000mg, no? It's all about variation. One day, you might have 500mg of sodium and another you might have 3000mg. As long as you eat healthily and try and keep a balance, one day over the reccommended will not harm you. Sodium is necessary in the body, so unless you've got blood pressure issues, I wouldn't worry too much.

yes from what i have read 1500mg sounds good....i usually try to keep no higher than that....you are right though, watch out for "low fat" and "diet" they usually just replace it with other things like sugar and salt :p

Since I started mfp last week I've been shocked at my sodium consumption. The culprit is processed food and such staples as dairy products, lunch meat and so on. One day we went to Chili's for dinner and their Guiltless Grill sirloin, which has a rub of some sort, was out of sight. My total sodium that day was triple the daily recommendation of 2300 mg.! For heart patients and others with compromised health, 1500 mg. is the max allowance. Even my favorite diet soda was higher than expected. Guess I can only drink water and eat fresh fruits and veggies. Today I'm going to cook some chicken breasts to replace my favorite lunchmeat, shaved chicken. Thank heavens mfp lists all nutritional info in the food database. My eyes have been opened!:frown:

You mean half kilo of sodium per day? :noway:
In my country the max recommendation is 2,4g (for women) and 2,8g (for men) of sodium per day. That means 6 and 7 grams of salt per day.
  • u sure thats not mg, most stuff in uk is counted in grams but mfp counts as mg. 400mg is .04gms. hope that helps.x

Lol, I had meant 500mg - which is what Experts say, but then the site I went on also says the recommended amount of sodium is anything between 1500 mg and 2300 mg per day

    MG!!!!!! lol, not grams lol.

Plus, what I ate was Tuna Steak (John West), so I didn't think that would be that bad lol. (more fool me).
