What exactly do you mean by 'thyroid problems"? Are you on thyroid medication for an underactive thyroid? If so, your dose might need changing. If your dose is fine, then your thyroid shouldn't be an issue. Need more info.

I have an underactive thyroid and take 125mcgr of thyroxine every day - and have done for the last 6 - 7 years. I don't think anyone who is overweight can lose it easily - I know I struggled before I developed my underactive thyroid (which I am convinced I got through abusing my metabolism with diet pills years ago!!!). As long as your dose is right it is just about eating less and moving more!!! You can do it and MFP will definitely help you!! I started out with MFP in June this year and I have lost 20lbs, developed a new addiction to exercise and I have never felt better in a long time. I wish you all the luck in the world and hope you find the motivation to succeed that I have by using this marvellous website. xxx :flowerforyou:

I am hypothyroid, am on T3 & T4 meds, and supplement with iodine. By tracking calories eaten and exercising, I have lost 15 lbs. since May of this year. It can be done. :) Good luck!

There are ten thousand excuses for not losing weight. Properly treated hypothyroidism is not a valid one.

First step is to have your thyroid checked and make sure your levels are right - with meds or not. But, you have to count the calories. My doc told me that I would only lose what my thyroid caused me to gain. The rest of what I gained was my choice (or in my case fault, for bad choices) . I've lost 23 pounds since June. Thyroid meds didn't help me with that loss - only educating myself on what to eat and staying within my calorie limit. Thyroid issues can cause lots of issues (trust me I know), but don't let it become an excuse for what you can do to help yourself lose weight. Good luck!

Even with treatment, a lot of people with underactive thyroid still have symptoms, including weight gain. However, the thyroid issue only makes you more susceptible to gaining weight by lowering your metabolism and energy levels. It doesn't make it impossible to lose weight. Exercise and cutting calories will burn fat, you might just need to eat less and exercise more than someone else.

Like Scapez I am on two medications for thyroid, it is absolutely necessary to be sure your dosage is right, but once it is you need to do the work, diet & exercise. I finally got my meds right last winter and started dieting and exercising last spring. The weight is coming off.
I take vitamin and mineral supplements to be sure my body has the tools it needs to stay healthy and not stress my thyroid. I agree that thyroid may be part of the reason you gained weight, but it isn't the reason it is hanging around. Focus on healthy living one day and a time and it will soon amaze you how much weight you have lost...My ticker says 10 pounds but I didn't find MFP until 20 days ago, I have actually lost 48. And I did it 1/5 of a pound at a time....

I have an underactive thyroid and I have been on meds for years. My suggestion to you is to go to your doctor and make sure you are on the correct meds......I still get my annual blood test to check my thyroid every year....and I have had to have some adjustments. If the thyroid is okay then you need to change your eating habits and get on an exercise regimen.

I was fortunate that I never had an issue with my weight due to my active lifestyle and the correct thyroid meds however, the last few years I started putting the weight on and it was not coming of, of course I tried to blame my thyroid and my age, but low and behold my culprit was terrible eat habits and eating too much of the wrong foods. Since I have been on this site I have made healthier choices and have learned portion control. I have lost 11 pounds in 9 weeks and I am 6 pounds from my goal.

Good luck and don't get discouraged.
