Bras vs. HRM/calorie monitor straps--question...

I am investigating heart rate/calorie monitors. I notice most of the watches require that you wear a chest strap. How does this work around wearing a bra? Is it better to get one that doesn't need a chest strap? I found one but it seems to cost more. If you wear a strap all day to monitor calories does it get gross? Or is it washable--like easily in a sink? Does it stick to you? Whaddya'll think?

First thing is yes get one with a chest strap because they tend to be more accurate. You will wear the strap under your bra band. Yes most of these are washable. Secondly HRM monitors are not meant to be worn all day to monitor your calories just when you exercise. To monitor your calories all day I think you need like a Body Bug or something similar.

Just place the chest strap under your bra at the bottom, under your boobs.

The other poster is right that 99% of HRM are NOT meant to be worn all day, only during exercise so they aren't accurate for all day calorie burning.

And yes, it does get gross! I soak mine in a baking soda and water solution at least once a week because it SMELLS!! Soap only goes so far. . .

The closer to the heart it's worn the better it is, but mine (Polar FT4) works fine when worn about half an inch below a bra.

Not only are the straps for that model washable, but you're instructed to rinse after every use plus wash in a machine every fifth time. Good washing is absolutely necessary, otherwise it stops working; the pickup is woven into the fabric and body sweat / grease ruins the conductivity.

You need one with a strap if you want an accurate estimation of calories burned.

Also, the strap feels just like a bra.. so you won't even notice it nor does it interfere with your bra.

You can machine wash most straps.. just use detergent only, no fabric softener and line dry them.

Thanks all, that helps. I feel better about getting one of these things.
