Do diet sodas make you fat?

I think each person is just different. I personally love my Diet Coke, it cures my sweet tooth and I feel like I got a treat. I have never noticed that I gain weight when I drink it. So, IMO it's just a personal thing.0

I am a former diet pepsi addict. I never log them bc they have no calories and no fat... but the other day (I drink one a day during the week for fhe caffiene bc I don't drink coffee, and prob 2-4 a day on the weekend...but I used to drink a 12 pack or more A DAY)...anyway, I noticed the sodium content in it. Its something like 35mg a serving.. so I drink 5-7 20 oz bottles of water a day and 1 soda... and I am retaining the water bc of the sodium.
I also feel bloated and gassy when I drink it. I don't think an occasional soda will make you GAIN weight, but it may hinder your losing.
When I was pregnant my OB turned me on to Diet Rite. I remembered it being my grandma's drink of choice, but if you can find it, it still has 0 calories but also 0 sodium and no caffiene. It's also sweetened with splenda instead of aspartame. I drink about 2 a day and I can get the sweetness and then fizz without the bad stuff!0 -
I do not drink any soda, and I would not drink "diet" soda for any reason : http://www.nytimes.com/2008/02/05/health/nutrition/05symp.html0

Diet sodas don't make you fat. There was a study published a while back where the people in the study who drank diet soda tended to weigh more than those that did not drink it, including those that drank regular soday. The study did not prove, or even suggest, that it was the diet soda that made the people heavier.0

I find that diet soda actually stops my sweet tooth cravings. And I look forward to the 2 (8 oz) glasses a day as my 'treat'. I know it's full of chemicals and probably not good for you, I'd like to quit but I just enjoy and icy cold diet coke too much:))))0

Correlation does not indicate causation. Diet soda doesn't make you fat. The study done didn't look at any other factors like perhaps the people who weighed more were switching from full-sugared sodas to diet soda in an attempt to lose weight. Or that along with that diet soda they were eating a double cheeseburger and large fries. It also didn't look at those who drink full sugared sodas and compare.
For me, personally, it doesn't hinder my weight loss in the least but I only have one a day since I don't drink coffee in the morning. The sodium is negligible, it doesn't make me bloat, and it doesn't make me crave sweets. I've also never been overweight.0 -
I used to drink 2L a day at university and then I left I switched to diet, but still c.4 cans a day. I went to Thailand and detoxed to quit as you read so much bad stuff about it - and my Mom keeps going on about it (detoxing gave me the mother of a headache - I don't drink tea or coffee so my only caffeine source - assume this was why) and gave up for nearly 3 years. Made bugger all difference to my weight or my feeling of well being so took it up again a few years ago - 2-4 cans a day. I think you just have to maybe keep a track of whether you think it is making you crave, bloat or feel unwell... it doesn't make me crave (if I want something sweet surely it's better than cake or biscuits? and certainly with a spirit it's better than beer or wine), it doesn't make me feel unwell but possibly it does make me bloat (?) ... the biggest problem I am aware of (a big one!) is that when I'm thirsty I have a DC instead of water.0

I drink 2 a day with no issues. With no calories in it, the soda itself doesn't make you fat. You need calories to do that.
The question wasn't if diet soda made you fat. The question was if it made you crave food/sweets more.0 -

They really don't.0 -
nope caloric surpluses make you fat0

NOOOO! THEY ARE MY BEST FREINDS! They are my meal replacement, because they make me nice and full all with ZERO calories they don't make you gain weight. they have zero calories...
You should NEVER replace an entire meal with a diet soda...0 -
I've been successful losing weight without drinking diet sodas and I've been successful losing weight drinking diet coke. This time around I'm down 108 lbs in 18 months and I still drink at least one 32 ounce fountain diet coke a day. It's my one vice -- I don't smoke, don't drink coffee or tea, drink alcohol on rare occasions; so for me this is one thing I can do on a daily basis and be fine with. I still try to drink at least 100 oz of water a day.
For me, I don't tend to crave sugars so it doesn't seem to make a difference. I'm sure for others it could trigger sugar cravings.0 -

They really don't.
True. For a large 32ounce Diet Coke, the sodium is around 50 mg. Your typical store bought granola bar is usually over 100 mg of sodium.0 -
They actually curb my appetite and I find myself reaching for them more often than I should. But they do make me extremely bloated. I know a lot of people who have lost weight drinking them.
Even though they don't make most people gain weight, they are very unhealthy for your health in general.0 -
