Someone help me explain this

Ok...I lost 90 lbs in a year. Then I lost 1 more pound in the last 4 weeks. I have been eating the same amount of calories. MFP is set at 1300 and I exercise 4-5 x's per week. I do eat back most of my exercise calories but not all. I have also recently started running on top of my 3 x's per week Zumba class. I really wasn't concerned about losing weight any more. I have the mentality of being healthy not dieting. I've made a lifestyle change and I figure my body will get to a happy weight and maintain as long as I'm treating it right.

Now, this is what happened. Yesterday, I had my normal oatmeal and blueberries for breakfast, vegitarian stuffed grape leaves for lunch, and a small portioni of curried tofu for dinner (small as in it tasted awful so I ate some grapes and more grape leaves)

But, here is where the situation confuses me. I sell Lindt chocolate and I got a shipment of the new stuff so I tried quite a bit of it. I logged everything and ended up going over like 200 calories. Then I had a party last night at my mom's house and had a few pretzles dipped in chocolate fondue, a couple strawberries and then another hand full of pretzels that I didn't log ...figured I was over anyway...oh well! lol. It was extremely hot yesterday and so I didn't run and didn't do any other exercise.

What confuses me....I got on the scale this morning and weighed 1 1/2 lb less than I did the previous morning. I have had this happen before where I eat normal and exercise but don't lose weight then I have an off day and don't exercise and it seems to jump start my loss again!

Someone explain the science of this please!

I was over yesterday too and ended up 2lbs down this morning. There isn't always a scientific explanation for these things. Probably water weight that for some reason your body decided to let go. I've heard that exercise can actually encourage your body to store more water in the muscles so a rest day might help release it.

Basically you probably have too large a calorie deficit for the weight of your body. Here is a helpful guide http://www.myfitnesspal.com/topics/show/61706-guide-to-calorie-deficits

I would suggest changing your weight loss goals lower. If you are at 2 pounds/week drop it to 1, if you are at 1 pound per week drop it to .5 per week. This will probably help.

Can't explain it, but that happens to me quite often!

Also, I work in the Lindt factory...isn't the chocolate great?

  • thanks for the information...I will try to start eating more. Problem is, I'm eating filling foods, I'm not hungry enough to eat more. But, I will try. But, I'm happy where I am if I don't lose anymore :) I've come a long way baby!

    Hi,

It could be water, time of the month, time of day, scales being wrong or on a different part of the floor. To be honest don't worry, i would also start weighing only once a week, same time on the same scales, why worry everyday if it's fitness and health that your wanting to maintain?

    Hope this helps

Could be that the increase in activity has put you further in a calorie deficit than you realize. Eating the higher calories got your metabolism up to the effort you were putting in and off come the pounds. People do have varying results.
  • lol...had to giggle at the TOM theory. Sorry, can't be it for me. I had a hysterectomy a few years ago. (yes I'm only 36) That's another reason doctor is surprised I've done so well with the weight loss. Women losing 10 lbs after menopause is really difficult....but losing almost 100! Unheard of.

To answer the why weigh every day thing....habit...have done it all my life.
  • I almost always see the scale move down the day after I go over, if I have been good the rest of the week! I don't really care about the science behind it, it is what it is :-)
