Attending a Wedding Tonight

Just thought I would put up an accountability post -- I am attending a wedding tonight. It has all kinds of risk factors -- alcohol, appetizers, dinner -- none of which I can check out ahead of time to plan my calories (although I guess I could make some educated guesses). On top of that, I don't know that many people, so I'll be bored, and it's outdoors, so I'll be hot.

Here's my game plan:

1) Enter an educated guess for what I'll eat before I go, then make substitutions as necessary once I get there. Shoot for <1000 calories for the evening.

2) Concentrate on socializing to avoid the temptation to eat, and don't stay near any food bar.

3) Try to drink a bunch of 0 calorie drinks like water or diet coke.

4) Report how I did late tonight/early tomorrow.

5) Don't sweat it too much -- it's just one night, as long as I don't use that as an excuse to eat drink 3000 calories.

Any other suggestions would be most welcome, thanks!

Get in an extra workout before you go!

also.... get out on the dance floor and burn those calories away! It'll be fun too!

I just successfully naviagated a wedding, drinks and all!

I planned ahead, just like you are doing. Take another poster's advice and EXERCISE before. Not only will you feel energized and happier at the wedding, but you will look fabulous for having done it as well.

Eat a little something before-- I chose a Fiber One brownie. By the time the ceremony is over, you'll be glad you had a bite before.

I tried one of the rotating appetizers and refused the rest. If you are feeling deprived, you are more likely to pig out on cake or dinner later. I love your idea of staying away from the food, but I do think you should have at least one drink (unless there are history or health reasons not to).

Chat everyone up! There is a lot to talk about at a wedding, so talking discourages eating / drinking too much. Use your visual portion sizes at a wedding-- a fist for meat, half the plate of fruit / veggies, etc.

Just a few bites of cake between dancing all night long!

That is how I did it. :)

    Good luck!

It's in Hamilton, abt 2 hours SW of Columbus.

All right, I've journaled the following as a goal:

    2 mini canapes: 106 cal
    5 oz champagne: 125 cal
5 oz red wine: 106 cal
    3 oz steak: 220 cal
1 cup sauteed mixed vegetables: 150 cal
<planning to skip bread or mashed potatoes, pasta, etc.>
1/2 of a 3 inch square slice wedding cake: 250 cal

    Total: 957 cal.

I'll try to do substitutions on the fly as I get there and will adjust my diary to the actual food when I get back.

Thanks for the great advice, everyone!

Update: Thanks again for the advice everyone, it went great. The wedding was great. My tentative menu was way off -- they did a (delicious) pig roast, but since I had gamed out approximate quantities and calories, I just made substitutions on the fly. I just got home and did the math, and it turns out that I came in 24 calories under my target + exercise, so it was a good day.
