It's different. People choose their milk for a lot of reasons, I'd hate to say one was "good for you" and imply that another one wasn't.

I like soy because it's lower in sugar, and also cos I'm trying to eat more soy products. But I don't avoid cows milk - in the office or at other people's houses I'm quite happy to drink cows milk, and I don't think there's anything wrong with it.

Cow's milk is ok... a little fatty... Soy milk is not as good of a hoice, contrary to popular belief. A) We are unsure as to the long term effects of soy on the body B) Soy milk is full of carageenan which is a thickening agent that is really not that good for you.

My son and I are both Lactose intolerant and we were using soy milk until I studied it in one of my courses for nutrition. I have now switched us both to Almond milk. The original and unsweeetened have no carageenan in them, they are VERY low in calories but packed full of nutrition as almonds are a super food.

Try it... you may like it! I LOVE it!!

  • There are benefits and drawbacks to both. Cow milk is what we're generally used to and it's easily accessible. Soy milk is a great alternative if you want something different. However, you can be allergic to cow milk or lactose intolerant. A lot of people seem to have soy intolerance as well though, so it's whichever one you react better to. Also, there are the talks of the hormonal drawbacks to both, but I'm not very knowledgeable on that front.

There are quite a few types of 'milk' out there (e.g. almond milk, as has been suggested already) so shop around!

Great tips and insight in this thread.

Personally, I stopped drinking cow's milk about 8 years ago. It just always grossed me out. But I looooove Silk's Light Vanilla Soy Milk (70 calories/cup). Almond milk is spectacular, too.

I say, try both and drink what you like. :)

I can drink either one and enjoy them both. I switched to soy for a while because of higher cholesterol then I would have liked (I was only 28 years old). I switched back to regular milk recently because of cost and the fact it has ore calcium then soy and I am lacking that in my diet.

I haven't tried almond milk yet but that next on the list, if I have enough money from groceries. Fresh Produce is way to expensive :(
  • I am going to try Almond milk now. where do you find it? Health food stores?

I found Silk brand almond milk right next to the regular cows milk, and soy milk. I tend to go for the milk in the fridge parts, not the ones out on the shelves in the little boxes.

I am pretty lactose intolerant. I like soy milk, and I'm trying almond milk now.

Back in health class in high school our teacher told us there is only one milk that was designed for humans to drink, and was the best and healthiest for you.
Breast milk. everything else just isn't made for humans.

I drink whatever people have in their houses if I'm having coffee or cereal. Otherwise I do almond milk. Lower in calories, plus my hubby gets an itchy reaction from soy. I don't have a problem with soy as long as it's not genetically modified--goes for tofu products as well. Either one is great for calcium.
  • I cut way back on cows milk because of the high sugar content - I'm trying to curb all my sugar intake, and cows milk was an easy cut for me.

I also vote for almond milk. I don't know why, but I feel so much better putting my money towards almond milk not soy milk. In any case, It's becoming quite popular now - you should be able to find it in any grocery store - not just the health food stores.

I'm allergic to Cows milk, so I use Goat's milk, and on occasion Soy Milk. I use Rich's non-dairy creamer, (in the frozen section) for my coffee, and it's soy.

There are people out there who are allergic to soy, so it's very subjective and individual.

But here's something to think about. Cow milk is for baby cows to help them grow up to be 300 - 600 pound animal. Goat's milk is for baby goats who grow up to be a 100 - 200 lb goat. Goats are limber, cows are not. Goat milk is closer to human milk than Cow milk, easier to digest, smaller fat molecules, and 2/3rds of the world's population drinks goat milk rather than cow milk. Countries with higher consumption of Cow milk have higher obesity rates. People who are allergic to cow milk may often times be able to have goat milk. (like me!)
