I know it comes down to height, weight and hr? i think but its so disappointing to work my *kitten* off at the gym for a hour and half and burn 450 calories when other people can burn 450 in 30 mins, sigh

I hear you! I'm little and I burn about 5 crackers off during a Jillian Michaels workout. LOL. It kind of sucks.;)0

i've always wanted to have a high burn, but i've never burnt more than i think like...... 320 calories lol i'm not very good at exercising for a long time!:blushing:0

It really varies from person to person and on which zone you work out... working out for 1 hour at 100 beats per minute is completely different then working out at 150 beats per minute.0

What type of exercises are you doing?
The amount of energy you exert has a LOT to do with the calorie burn. The only workout I've ever done where I burn approximately 100 calories for every 10 minutes was Insanity. And believe me, you feel it in that!!0 -
This! I was so proud of working out for 80+ minutes and burning about 500 calories until someone updated their exercise status and burned about 900 in the same amount of time.0

How are you comparing? To other people with HRMs?0
-
Well the less you weigh, the less you burn!
At my heaviest I was burning 720 calories an hour on my elliptical. Now I burn 600.
Just stick to it, you get there eventually!0 -
How are you measuring your heart rate? With a decent heart rate monitor, or on the built in ones on machines at the gym or with the database here?
(Kettlebells - even just the basic 2 handed swing - will burn a large amount of calories.)0 -
It's due to your height and weight. The bigger you are (taller/weight) wise the more you burn. On a good day I burn 300 for 40 mins most of the time it's closer to the 275 mark. My husband burns at least 2 to 3 times in the same amount of time, but he is 10 inces taller and has 110 pounds on me. Good luck and just keep at it.0

Sadly, when you're short or small you can burn half as much for the same work. It doesn't seem fair, does it?0

i use the machine hrm at mo because mine broke but i do interval training go roughly between 145bpm and 170, its just be nice to burn more0

I know I burn less because I'm 5'2" and 106 lbs. When I think of it that way I feel much better about that0
-
It’s so not fair, is it? Can totally relate! I use a HRM to track my workouts.0

Let's put this into perspective, you COULD burn more, but you'd have to put on weight to do it I don't think you want to do that. Is it unfair, sure, but look at the alternative
Your body has just become more efficient! That is a good thing - I know it doesn't feel like it though when you are trying to eat more and/or put your body in a calorie deficit.0 -
Age is a factor as well. When you are old like me you burn more than you youngsters, lol! But the best way to burn more calories is to up your levels. If you're at level 3 on the elliptical or treadmill or bike, go to level 5, and you'll burn more. You have to look at age, sex, weight, VO2max, average heart rate, average steps per minute, SPM, and time worked out. Then you have to use about 3 different calculators to find the average, and use that at your calories burned.
Also, muscle is always good to have as it burns more calories, ups your metabolism, but negates what is appearing on the scale.
Here's two sites I use as a start.
http://www.shapesense.com/fitness-exercise/calculators/heart-rate-based-calorie-burn-calculator.aspx
http://www.shapesense.com/fitness-exercise/calculators/vo2max-calculator.aspx
I'm not sure that any of these calculators, even using a heart rate monitor, accurately gauge what you burn, or how much you need to burn. I'm at the point of realizing that everything will work if you're within the correct range, I always figure lower when entering my calories burned.0 -
