First time 5k over 50

Just wondering if there is anyone out there over 50 who is training for a 5K. I am 53 and have never been a runner, I have just started jogging and am enjoying it. I think this would be a good goal to work towards and I am thinking
of doing this. I worry at my age about injuring myself...knees or something and then not being able to exercise at all. I'd love to hear some success stories from any of you out there!! :happy:

That is inspiriational. I am 49 and every time I try to jog, I feel like something is going to fall out! HA... I want to up my cardio though. Can't give you any success story on me running, but keep up the good work!0

I'm 50 at the end of December and I've just finished the running programme c25k. I have never been a runner, or done any regular exercise, so if I can do it anyone can!! It's a great programme, easing you into running gradually. I used the "get running" app which I found very helpful. Now I really love to run and I do so 3 times a week (I'd do it more, but my body needs time to recover between runs) :grumble: Apart from a niggling heel injury, and a sore knee sometimes I have been injury free. I do trail running, the soft ground is easier on my joints and I am lucky enough to have a beautiful common to run in. I don't run very fast but after the 9 week programme I can now run for over 1 hour.

I am definitely over 50, overweight and have really never been a runner. I too have been doing the C25K program and with one more day of running will have completed it. I had a 5K in mind to run but feel I am too slow now and haven't yet run 5K distance. After I complete the program for time run 30 minutes. I will be working on speed and distance until I feel confident in running 5K in a decent time. I am really starting to love running. I plan to do this by adding walking intervals in one day a week and by running longer another day a week until I can either run fast enough or long enough to do 5K. I am at 2+ miles in 30 minutes.0

I know what you mean! I never ran much because I am big up top and just felt too bouncyI finally found a workout bra that works for me and now can do what I never felt I could before! Anyway, this may be a pipe dream but I think it would feel so good to finish...even if Im last to the finish line:laugh: but thats okay, its the since of accomplishment I am looking for!!0

Oh, this is so encouraging to me! Running for an hour straight just seems impossible to me right now, but I would love to get to that point. I know there are several programs out there to train for this kind of thing and I need to look into them. Thank you for

It will not be my first because I did do the C25K program about 5 years ago, and ran 2 5K's that summer. But...I put all my weight on and more, so I started again. This time, I read the book being promoted by Runner's World called "Run Your Butt Off". It is a great "getting started" book even if you use C25K. I also read "The Courage To Start" by John Bingham. Both of these books stress not worrying about speed!
I ran 3.5 miles on Saturday (first time at that distance) using the premise of the Galloway method. I ran 4 mins/walked 1. Up to this time, my pace was nearly 15 min miles...using the 4/1 thing...I ran farther and my pace was 14.1 I was pumped!! I'm still playing around with it right now.

I'm 46 and ran my first 5K this spring. I am now training a group of former "couch potatoes" to run their first 5K on October 1. Many of the participants are over 50, several in their 60's. We are following a program call "No Boundaries". You may want to check to see it is offered anywhere in your city.0
