Day 5

This is day 5 of the new me. So far I am sticking to healthy eating and have been doing 60 min. of exersice each day. Yesterday was a challenge day for me. Hubby and I went grocery shopping. It takes us and hour just to get to the nearest city that has more than 1 store which means we usually eat out for lunch. While in WAL-mart picking up meds and such I went over to the food section and saw the new Campbell's select Harvest Light Soups. I picked up a few cans because they were on sale and about $.80 cheaper than the progresso I normally buy. I found a Maryland-style crab soup that is 80 cals for 1 cup. That's 160 for the whole can! Since I keep a stash of soup and crackers at work for days I am too rushed to make a lunch and hate dealing with leftovers at work I was very happy. Hopefully it tastes good.
Eating lunch - hmm- hubby wasn't feeling the best so no real food choices. He wanted Taco Bell:huh: so I had a ranchero chicken soft taco and my water. Way less than I normally eat (hince the fat!) but since I have been trying to tweak my eating habits I did some self talk and decided that I was fine with 1 taco. I was too.
On another note- day 5 without a soda- and I don't miss it. I am so busy tring to get in all my water for the day...News Years Eve we stayed home. I was going to have a couple of vodkas with diet pepsi. By the time evening rolled around I didn't want to screw up my soda intake . Choices all about choices.

Good for you! One day at a time, and one change at a time is the way to go! Keep up the good work!0 -
Next time you need to get groceries from town, why don't you pack a lunch with sandwiches and fruit or even buy some groceries that you can make into a lunch. A loaf of bread and some meat or cheese. You're probably buying it anyways.
When I'm out doing errands for awhile, I try to remember to bring some water, a granola bar and fruit because I know I'll get hungry and want to get a treat. I'll usually end up eating my snacks as I don't want to spend the money on fast food as I've already got snacks ready to go.
This also comes from growing up in a money-conscious family where I could probably count on two hands the times we stopped for fast food as a kid/teenager when on trips. There was always a container of cut up veggies and sandwiches for any trip.0 -
Because we live out in the middle of nowhere I use the twice monthly shopping trip as a treat to eat out- although Taco Bell isn't a treat. I wanna live in the real world. I grew up with 7 brothers and sisters in a navy family and even way back then it cost way too much to eat out even at a fast food place. Never did it as a kid. Raising my own 2 young'uns we decided that I would stay at home and we'd make it on 1 paycheck. We did but money was very tight. Made it by doing a lot of what my ma taught me as a kid feeding so many- Now that the kiddos are up and gone we have "earned" those little treats. I have to pack a lunch every day for school so packing a lunch for shopping is kinda boring (for me). I do understand you reasoning. However, I want to be able to know I can eat out and still make good choices. I spent 4 days at a workshop in Salt Lake City this past summer and gained weight cause of all the great resturants to choose from. (We are lterally out in the middle of nowhere with 1 grocery store the english speakers go to and 3 mexican markets that are sorta outbounds for me. ) I have another 3 day workshop in Denver coming up and want to be able to make really good choices foodwise. (I have always been on the seefood diet- see food- eat it)0

I went to a Mexican market when I was in Ohio...delicious! We went to their buffet (which wasn't healthy, but I didn't care!) and then went to their produce section. They have plenty of raw meat from chicken to goat, vegetables, fruit, and then interesting snack foods that you can't get in the states. I really don't see a problem with going to one to save yourself the 2hr round trip to Wal Mart. You don't need to know Spanish to shop--everyone understands universal signals like pointing and nodding and smiling.0

FYI---I buy Luna bars and keep them in the car ...they are a life saver and tasty too!0

You're right...twice a month is definitely a good excuse for eating out! I get tired of the packed lunches too.0

hmmmmm- adore mexican food and love to go in (especially the tortilla shop)and see what's new and different in the markets. However- My hubby is 1 of only 3 town cops in a town where 90 % of population is illlegal and while there are some really nice, friendly folks many know I am a cop's wife and so I get lots of dirty looks, my car has had the tires slashed and other minor issues. Rather not deal with'em. They don't want my money fine with me- their choice as well as other stores in aother towns who have bad service and ill-tempered employees- don't shop there either!:laugh:0
