Is 8 hours of sleep necessary?

I've been functioning on 5-6 hours of sleep a night. I always feel tired when I exceed 8 hours of sleep. Yet, I keep hearing (from friends and family) that 8 hours of sleep is required for optimal health.

8 hours can be too much for you if it makes you more tired the next day after having slept that long...My optimal sleep hours is actually 7 hours. If I sleep too less or too much, I am exhausted the next day....
  • I try to sleep about 8 hours. More or less makes me tired : ) But it all depends on what you need....

It used to be 8 was recommended. Now it's 7-9. I honestly feel better when I'm getting a consistent 8 hours per day. Nowadays, I just get what I can.

Your body will only take the sleep it needs.. I had sleep issues after i had my son i couldn't seem to fall asleep and never stayed asleep that long.. I'm still running on about 4-6 hours a night.. My doctor told me that was all my body needed (after a sleep study) There are days when i need a little more and i let it happen.. Don't force yourself to sleep longer than you want and if you feel like you need a nap take it :) good luck!!

If I don't sleep between 8-10 hours, I am dead tired. You're lucky you don't need as much sleep. ;)
  • It all depends on the person, Some people need fewer hours of sleep to feel completely energized then others. Others need more 8+ hours. I remember readin this somewhere, to feel completely energized you need to let your body wake up on it's own because of the varies of stages it goes through while sleeping and cycles throughout the night. If the cycles are completed without interruption, then your feel as good as you can when you wake up!
