Why do dressmakers have to use different cut sizes???

I went to George (at Asda) today, to buy smaller trousers, I've gone from a size 24 (UK) back in September, to a size 20 last month, well, the size 20 trousers are too big, sooooo, off to Asda I went, bought some nice new ones - size 18, but....I get them home, try them on, and they are more like a size 16, :grumble:

Admittingly I did buy the size 20's in Peacocks, so I guess I'll be heading back to them for my size 18

Ah well, we learn new things every day - think I'll just take the trousers in a couple of inches for now, as I don't have time to go to Peacocks until next weekend.

I hate it too. Men are so lucky -- pants are measured at the waist and the inseam. No need for guessing.

I'm one size in jeans (depending on the store) and another dress pants. No telling what actual dress size I wear. It's ridiculous.

Ugh, I know, women's clothing sizes are such a pain! In pants I am anywhere from a 10/11 to a 16 (on average a 12) depending on the store, shirts are anywhere from a medium to a 2X and don't even get me started on formal wear. I about fainted when the lady told me I would need a size 24 for my maid of honour dress last year.

It's an absolute nightmare - why can't they all follow the same gauge???
I know we are all different shapes and sizes, but so are men, yet they don't have any trouble - just look for XXL (for example) and hey presto, it'll fit :grumble: :grumble: :grumble:

It is well annoying!! I'm sure most of us would rather be one size, I;m another one who is anything from a 12 to a 16 depending on the store (also in the UK), its plain stupid!! :explode: I think they reckon we are more likely to buy if it is carrying a smaller size label?!?

I agree, it's extremely annoying. I can't even guess what size jeans I'll wear anymore. Depending on cut, I can wear anything from a size 8 to a size 16. It's insane. Who has time for that? It's really hard to find a decent cut, most are either too big in the waist or way too narrow through the thighs. The other day I tried on a pair of pants that fit exactly right through the hips, legs and length and were 6 inches too big in the waist. And I'm tired of having to hem every pair of pants. I've been trying to find some yoga pants (not capris but full length) and they are all at least 6 inches too long. Who's wearing 6 inch heels with yoga pants?
  • I agree too. I can wear anywhere from a size 8 - 10 in jeans, 11 in dress pants, and an XL in shirts. Guys are lucky that they don't have to wear so many different sizes.

I know, H & M has the best yoga pants, I have three pair and will probably buy a pair everytime I go as long as they keep making them. But they are too long. The one pair I have I always wear on my walks and I have worn holes into the bottom part because I am walking on them. I am short though, and I am used to long pants, but I really don't want to spend $8.00 in tailoring on a 12 dollar pair of pants.

OK gurls, gather round, and we'll have a nice cup of chamomile tea and let the ol Jamerz tell you about guys sizes... :drinker:
Time used to be, back in the day, I could walk into any store in this great land of ours, from coast to coast, and the same size pants, or shirt, would fit my in each and every store. Period. That was back when we didn't wear helmets to ride bikes, and you could get a bomb pop from the ice cream guy for a dime. :glasses:

Well, those craze marketers that size your fun garments, finally got the guys in men's fashions to do enuff drugs in the 80's :smokin: that then *they* started messing with OUR sizes too! :grumble: So now I hafta try on each and every pair of pants I buy! Arrrgggg!!!! I should be able to go into any store and buy whatever my size is, and thats that. I abso hate shopping anymore, they've killed us guys usual stlye of doing the "dash in and out"...

I so hear you on this!

I desperately want to fit into a size 16 and be able to shop in places other than the plus size stores.

The problem is that even though I am getting very close to a 16.... I am only in a 16 at the plus size stores!!!!

I had to go dress shopping for Christmas and that was a total nightmare!

Just remember to try on pants at the store girls! Also, buy according to fit and not the number on the tag. (I am terrible with this now, I want to see 16 or I won't buy it! But do as I say, not as I do! )
  • Yes, yes, yes!

I usually buy my dress clothes at Express, but there was a wicked good sale at the Limited, so I went in and pulled a size 4 (my Express size) off the rack. Tried 'em on - too big... grabbed a 2 - better, but still loose... then, the size 0 - they fit! On one hand, I was really excited - I mean, I HAVE NO SIZE! But, on the other hand, I still wear a 4 everywhere else. Reality check!

Stupid as I know this is, I am now a Limited shopper for life!

(BTW, I no a size 0 is not healthy for most people, but I'm 5' 2", so spare me the rants!)
  • I am a fashion design student, and I find it terribly annoying that women's wear is the only category that does not have any regulation as far as sizing. It's kinda willy-nilly. And furthermore, there are very few of my classmates who design for anything over a size six!! On principle, I rarely make anything lower than a 14. So crazy!!!
