Drinking Water/Running With Water?

For those of you who drink 8 glasses or more a day...how do you do it?!

I am trying to drink more water...but I can never get more than 6. I normally drink about 4 while working out, and sometimes that's it. I either can't drink anymore, or I just forget to drink during the way. I don't drink anything else, all I use is light soy milk in the morning and water.

Also, I am training for a half marathon and it is FINALLY cool enough to be able to do some of my workouts outside. However, I love to drink water during my workouts, and hate carrying a bottle, my ipod, and house keys everytime I'm out. What do you use, or how do you train yourself to not need the water? I normally go out for 30-60 minutes.

Thanks! :)

First - how I get my water in. I drink about 40 oz each morning during my workout. Then I drink a 20oz bottle at lunch and another with dinner. So that's about 80oz a day - minimum. I also drink more here and there. Some days I'm upwards of 100 oz.

Second - water and running. If I'm running only 4-5 miles (outside), I don't carry water. I just drink a lot when I'm done. If I'm doing a longer run, I have a hyrdration belt that holds 2 10-oz bottles. Most of my routes have places along the way that I can refill if needed. I've also been known to "plant" water along my route. I also have a 3mile loop I run, and if I do it more than once I'll often stop at the car between loops to rehydrdate.

I carry around a water bottle with me all the time and just sip every time I think about it. :)

As for running -- I bought a fuel belt waist pack. It has a pocket in it to carry keys/phone/gels, etc. Mine also holds 4 10oz water bottles with angled necks so I don't even have to stop running to drink. It's been such a blessing to have as I have been marathon training through the summer.

Also, you don't want to train yourself to go without the water during your workout!! Hydration is key for your muscles to work properly, especially if you are distance running.

I have a big 3 liter jug that I carry with me everywhere. For when I go out to class or running errands or something, I have a 1.5 liter bottle that I take. I find that if I keep water with me at ALL times it helps me to remember to drink it. I usually end up drinking 2-3 liters a day. And I don't keep buying these bottles, I just refill the ones I have! :)
  • I keep a bottle next to me all day. I fill it right away in the morning and once it is empty fill it right back up. Some days I'm not as successful but I find the more I drink water the less I need to eat as I don't feel so hungry. I only do flavored water so maybe that helps - crystal light packets are great.

Towards the end of the day if I am not where I need to be I force down what I need.

Try a water hydration system you wear on your back - these usually have pockets too that you can put the keys and Ipod in.

i just got a giant 8 cup jug and i make sure to drink it all before the day is over, this is easy at work but harder at home on the weekends...i never feel like drinking during my run, it gives me a side stitch if i do

also i see people running with special little water bottle belts to carry it with
  • I drink 16-24 oz every morning before I put anything else into my body. I have a large glass that holds 24 oz and I refill it and drink it all several times a day. Aside from the occasional Red Bull or Monster Rehab - or almond milk or orange juice - water is ALL I drink. Used to hate it. Now I'm addicted. :)

I can drink anywhere from 8-15 cups of water in a day... but I've always been a big water drinker. First thing in the morning I do is drink a big glass of water... and everytime I go into the kitchen I make it a point to drink a glass of water, drink a glass before a meal and one during a meal. Once in a while I'll take the kids for Happy Hour at Sonic and for myself I'll get a Rt.44 water... then just reuse the cup for a few days. I usually drink a bottle of water during a workout too.

I have a water bottle throughout the day and start drinking water as soon as I get up. If I am running under an hour I do not usually take water with me but I am well hydrated throughout the day especially since I live in Texas. Now I am not very fast when it comes to running so I know I will be out on the course for 2-3 hours during the half marathon. I choose to carry water then I can decide when I need water or not.

I drink water before every meal and during every meal. Always drink water before a workout and after. Sometimes during if I do a long run. For long runs I use a camelbak waist belt. I can't carry things in my hands when I run. It has pockets for keys, ipod and my phone.
  • I have an older version of this bottle that I run with: http://www.roadrunnersports.com/rrs/products/NTN112/

I like that I can slip my car key and ID in it, and I usually keep a couple bucks in it just in case. I hate wearing anything around my waist so this is a better option for me. My phone doubles as my ipod, I try to wear running shorts with pockets and put that in there and then thread the ear buds through the inside of my shirt, otherwise I seem to be catching them and pulling them out a lot.

As far as water during the day, I have my coffee when I first get up, but keep 20 oz Rubbermaid bottles in the fridge with cold water, and drink on those all day long.

hmmm, some good ideas here... sounds like we're gonna have to start keeping a bottle with us all day- that seems to be what most people are doing!

For keeping water on me when I run, I have a little backpack that I keep my keys, water bottle, phone and wallet (with minimal cards- just health card, licence and debit) in so I don't have to carry it- I adjusted the straps so that it fits really snug, and isn't constantly jostling around. I don't mind carrying a water bottle though, and I'm on the lookout for good workout pants with pockets so I don't need to take that, but haven't been able to find any yet.
*edit* with this, I do have to stop every time I want some water... there's no easy way to pull it out while moving!

Why do sports wear manufacturer's not like giving women pockets?? sheesh!
  • The fuel belt is definitely the way to go for carrying water on an outdoor run. I can't carry anything in my hands when running. I have a 4 bottle Fuel Belt and just love it. I also plan routes that pass by a park with a water fountain, so I can stop and fill if necessary,
