Anyone out there on a low carb diet & running? I've noticed that carbs tend to do me dirty in matters of weightloss. However almost everything I read says I need to eat a lot of carbs in order run well (this = no bueno). Suggestions?

Just a lil background, I have about 40lbs to lose and i'm a super carb junkie. i was diagnosed w pcos a while ago and will be getting bloodwork done to see if i'm also insulin resistant. If I am IR, then me & carbs may develop a more strained relationship :-/

I am eating a low carb diet and running on the treadmill 6 days a week for 60 minutes. I used to be carb junkie myself, but I replaced the carbs I was eating with complex carbs like whole grain rice and broccoli (not sure if you are allowed those carbs) but I have been doing great, I believe that protein is great fuel for running, despite what some may say & you get more benefits from it than carbs. Best of luck to you!

I also have PCOS, and have cut out all processed carbs, and only get carbs from unprocessed foods. I do run, and don't have a problem. BUt, I find that I have to have a high fat, high protein diet to keep up. It took me a few weeks to be able to sustain my energy at the gym though. I would start to lose energy half way through my workout. Now that my body is used to the low carb diet, I don't have any problems.

before I got pregnant 12/09 I was 121 lbs and I ate carbs, low fat and high protein. I have always been able to lose weight while eating a lot of carbs and low fat. I tried it the other way around.. ie something like atkins and I gained weight and was ill. Some people need carbs to function (I know I do) and some do better with low carb.

Hey if your just looking to lose don't worry to much about the carbs for performance. Unless you were running for an event or something you don't need to worry to much about performance so don't stress about the carbs before. Keep your protein intake high (at least 1g / lb of lean mass at a minimum) for muscle retention and fat intake moderate for energy. If your doing long long runs which I don't recommend because you will lose more muscle this way if your on a deficit. If you are though make sure to get some bcaas in you to preserve muscle. Also when finished running lean protein and simple carb like fruit. Stay motivated!

I forgot to add i'm running a 10mile race in october. my goal for the race is just to finishn (seriously, i just wanna survive this thing!). training has been so-so, and my stamina isn't where it shld be so this next 4 weeks is gonna be critical, with training AND nutrition. i'm starting to get nervous bc i can't believe how quickly time has passed!

Thanks for the suggestions thus far, keep 'em comin! :-)
