Hey,

The weather is taking a turn for the colder and this will be my first fall running. What are some good things I should invest in to wear while running outdoors in the cooler temps vs the hot summer. Anyone have any favorites they can't run without?

    layers !

wear thing that keep you cool, cos the running will warm you up. !

you can get short sleeve rain tops they are always good.

stick to shorts if you can, but if not get some of them tight running pants and put shorts over the top

In the fall I wear capris running pants, short sleeve shirts vs the sleeveless I wear in the summer.

    LAYERS! no cotton!

A good pair of compression tights and a good wicking fabric shirt to start with :D I'm building a winter running wardrobe because I live in Wisconsin where it will be very cold soon enough.

I look like Rocky in a grey sweat suit when it gets cold and I go running.
All joking aside, I found this article on About.com

Wicking Base Layer: The layer closest to your body should be made from an appropriate wicking material, such as Thermion, Thinsulate, Thermax, Coolmax, polypropolene, and silk. This will keep your sweat off your body.

Insulating Layer: Your middle layer, which is needed for very cold weather, should be an insulating material, such as fleece, wool, or down. This layer creates a bubble of warm air around us.

Wind - & Water-proof Outer Layer: This layer is important, especially in snow, rain, or windy weather, which many of us fight during the winter.

Gloves/Mittens: Gloves are great for most weather, but in the coldest weather, mittens are best.

Runnersworld.com has a "what do I wear" tool that you plug your weather conditions into, and it recommends what to wear. It has been very helpful to me, although I generally need a little more warmth than they recommend. I like hot weather (not quite as hot as it has been here in the south lately, with heat indexes above 100!) I'd rather have 85-90 degrees than 35-40 degrees. There is something icky about sweating when it's cold outside. . . . It's just not right. I guess it's a good thing I live in the south.

Seriously, though, check the runners world website out. It is a good place to start.

Running will heat you up pretty quick so don't over think it. I tend to run year round. I live in Winnipeg which is often affectionately known as Winterpeg.

Typically I will add partial layers to suit the climate and run until the temperature is close to -40 with windchill or my ipod freezes... which ever comes first.

Early Fall will be shorts, long sleeve running shirt.
Mid Fall will be running tights, long sleeve running shirt.
Late Fall is running tights, long sleever running shirt, polar fleece vest, maybe a hat.
Early winter is running pants, long sleeve shirt, polar fleece vest and outer nylon shell, hat, gloves
Mid Winter is running pants, extra socks, long sleeve shirt, fleece running jacket, outer nylon shell, hat, face mask, mitts, scarf

Worst case scenario is that you can always take off a layer or open a zipper if you feel yourself overheating.

    Hope it helps!
