I might be being a bit silly but I read through some threads here and people are always talking about Carbs and Protein but I don't quite get it. Is more protein better? Less carbs? Could somebody explain because it could possibly really help me out as I seem to have hit a plateu in my weight loss. My diary is also available to view if anyone could give me some tips. I thought I'd done really well last week but I never lost any weight =(

Thanks

It could take more than a couple of weeks to see weight loss. Your best bet is to talk to a nutritionist to find out what is best for you. But, I can say that it's recommended you eat more protien when you're working out, and you'll need some carbs too. I don't really pay much attention to all of the detailed stuff, I just try to keep a ratio of 50/30/20 percent of my food from Protien/Fat/Carbs, respectively.

NO! Sorry. A dietitian. NOT a nutritionist. Nutritionist means nothing! Sorry. Just had to jump in on this. If you're going to talk to anyone, make it a dietitian. Anyone...ANYONE...can legally call him/herself a nutritionist. Dietitian, please.

Anyway. Good question, OP! I have my ratio set to 40% protein, 40% carbs and 20% fat if it helps. Also, check out the search function up there ^. It's full of useful past threads. Welcome!

Oh, good call. Talk to a dietitian. I didn't really know there was a difference. I just listen to what my MFP friends tell me.

Yeah, I felt really awful for "calling you out" because I totally didn't mean it like that. Hence the repeated apologies! And I still feel really bad. XD Sorry again!

But yeah, nutritionists have proven DANGEROUS around here. Dietitians have to get a bachelor's degree and register. Nutritionists just say, "Hey! I know about nutrition! Why? Cuz I said so! Now trust me with your body! And gimme all your monies!" Scary stuff!

Oh, also, OP, check out the Mayo Clinic Guidelines for healthy eating. I combined them with a little influence from P90X's Lean/Fat Loss nutrition guide to get my 40 P/40 C/20 F ratio:

LOL! No apologies! What kind of MFP would you be if you couldn't call me out for doling out erroneous advice?!

  • I try to keep my intake of carbs on the lower side, and I eat as much protein as I want. I'm not a ~low carber, or consider myself anything like that. It's just what has always worked for me, as well as worked for my boyfriend. Protein, and produce is majority of our diet. He's lost, and has been able to keep off 45 pounds over the past 10 months. Poke around at what you can find on the internet, or in books and see what works for you. We recently watched Fathead [on neflix] and it was really interesting.
  • Looking at my daily graphs it seems that my current ratio works out at around 60C/20P/20F

Might try and reduce my carbs and increase my protein for the next few weeks, any tips on how to turn 20% Carbs into Protein?!

    Thanks guys!

For most men and some women that do resistance training, they should eat at the very least 30% of daily intake in protein. It really depends on your individual goal, body building bulking cycle = obviously need more protein, recomp. cycle = not as much as bulking, cutting cycle = much less then bulking.

Second the Greek Yogurt suggestion... a 8 oz portion of plain chobani yogurt has 23 grams of protein!

Also chicken, and if you want, protein powders can do the trick :)

Bacon and eggs for breakfast (nothing else, maybe coffee)
Tossed salad with hard boiled egg, sliced cold meat, and dressing
Meat, veg, veg, veg for dinner
Snacks: nuts, jerky, guacamole with veg sticks

    Just a thought ... :-)

What works for ME is higher protein, lower carbs. I feel so much better when I don't eat carbs and eat more protein. Plus once I have a carb like pasta, sugar or bread....I want more. And more and MORE!! It's like I turn on a switch or something.

I've done them all. Atkins, Paleo, Dukkan, Eating Clean. The bottom line for me is I do better with more protein. Since you're making this your LIFESTYLE (nudge nudge wink wink) why not try a week and experiment? I did that recently and upped my calories after a 2 month stall and dropped 16 pounds. Yep!!! You just never know.

    Good luck and congrats!
