I just watched this show on the DOC channel tonight called "Killer at Large" and it is a documentary on junk food and how it is pushed down our throats! If you get a chance to TIVO it or find it then you have to watch it. If anything will keep you on your diet and also show you how important it is to eat healthy this show will do it!

What an eye opener!

It is not pushed down any of our throats. Whoever CHOOSES to eat the junk food does so of their own free will.

Agreed. We blame everyone but ourselves for everything in our lives, even our poor choices. Time to put our big girl panties and big boy underroos on and take responsibility for ourselves.
I hate junk food and think there is nothing worse a person can do to themselves than to fill their body full of crap, however, no one is pushing it down their throats except themselves.

Agreed.. But at the same time they make the crap food Cheaper and Easier to make so why wouldn't you choose the junk if it is more convenient.. Not that I am not guilty of it.
  • I can't find it on Netflix now...

It's DVD only on Netflix currently so I found it when I Googled for those that would like to see it but are unable to record it.

I'm not far into it but it greatly saddens me to see a very overweight 12 year olds parents allowing her to receive lipo at so young of age. 12 years old? Lipo? What happens when she'd done and sees the results is that going to give her incentive to make healthy food changes? Like I shared I'm not far into it and haven't watched the full movie in some years but it's not even weightloss surgery she's having but fat sucked out of her in areas her parents think she needs it out.

Something about her parents attitude about this disturbs me...:indifferent:

ETA: mmuzzatti thanks for bringing this movie back to our attention, I for one had forgotten about it and looking forward to seeing it again. Last time it was incredibly inspiring and yes shocking but I think we could all use the shock value in our lives from time to time. It's eye opening and one can really see the reality of choices we make now and how important they truly are now AND later.

Indeed. It's up to us what we eat. Junk or not, it serves a purpose. It's that treat that keeps you motivated for the rest of your healthy living. The problems start when you dont do it in moderation! One Mcdonalds a week will not kill you! If you take this attitude, then you could say almost any food is a killer!

And ofc they dont care about us, they only care about profits! Its called business! Do you think any for-profit company gives a s**t about any of their customers? Of course not! They just want the profits. Sad? Yes. Real life? Yes.

I pushed it down my own throat today. That is, after I walked past the freezers at Target today and saw, in very large print, that Breyer's Ice Cream was on sale. And, they had stacked the chocolate ice cream so high and so wide that it was pressed up against the window. There were no healthier options standing in the way. Before I knew it, my arm reached out. It went into my cart and sped through the checkout and into my car. And, before I could sit down to dinner . . . well, you know the rest.

I've been pre-conditioned. Blame it on commericals, ice cream truck, or reinforced memory. Whatever it was, I was hopeless. My mouth is happy, but it would have been wiser to wait, at least, until after dinner.

Good thing that there are some of us that can eat junk in moderation and not have any issues with weight gain.

So... your arm is a killer on the loose then? Better wear a cup for the next few days until they can apprehend the criminal.

So you are saying that you have no choice. I wonder, who decided to grab the ice cream, and who decided to eat it? You are using advertising, conditioning, and commercials as an excuse for your unhealthy diet. Stop blaming society for poor habits and start taking some responsibility for yourself. You can live a life manipulated by society and negative temptations or you can live a life of your own.
  • I have watched a lot of documentaries about our food system and I believe there is some truth to food scientists that "formulate" foods in such a way to make us want more...why else would they add sugar and/or salt to everything? And it does cost a lot more to buy healthy foods, since the junk is so heavily subsidized.

I'm sorry, I can not watch this. I have been instructed by one of my super smart friends to stop getting my information from documentaries. I'm permanately grounded from them. Sorry.

Here's the really fun part about accountability. People who know that don't need to hear it. People who need to know won't hear it. It makes ranting about how we all need to take responsibility for our actions little more than self-indulgence, even if it's completely true.

As long as you don't take the info in documentaries as being the absolute truth, then there's no reason not to become enlightened. Most documentary makers have an agenda... not always a misguided one... but it's only natural that when you find out something isn't as you thought it once was, that you want to enlighten others to your discovery.

I enjoy learning about new things, but I always try and get a balanced view... and sometime documentaries and the internet present a pretty skewed version of reality. You have to go beyond pages 1-5 to find what you are REALLY looking for.

I haven't seen this particular documentary, but it's true that most global concerns exploit something or someone at some point.

Fast food isn't BAD. It might not offer a balance of nutrients, but as long as you accept that most of it is calorifically dense then there is no reason why you cannot enjoy a burger or some fried chicken with some fries and ketcup/mayo every now and again. However, we all (should) know that it's not really gonna do us any favours in the long term if we over-indulge in pizza and take-aways on a daily basis.
