Halloween contacts, to buy or not to buy? PICS!

Has anyone bought or used Halloween contacts? Years ago I asked my optometrist about them and he basically said they were “dangerous” especially for people like me who have never worn contacts or glasses before. That was about 10 years ago when they cost $300 and now that contacts are more the norm not the exception and Halloween contacts are $29 a lens, I really want to spruce up my costume this year.

I was thinking of getting red b/c then I could use them as a zombie or as a vampire unlike cat eyes for example you can really only be one thing or white eyes that just aren’t as scary as the red.

I plan on being a zombie bride again this year at work (I'm working for a different company now). This photos below are of me and a co-worker October 2009. I had organized my entire team as a zombie wedding & bridal party, it was great! Plus since I had gotten married only 2 months prior (Aug 2009) I got to use my veil, tiara and shoes again, woo!

Thanks in advance you for your opinions/experiences!

Most of those brands aren't regulated by the FDA (I think that's which organization is in charge of them; I know for sure they aren't regulated by the government but I'm not 100% sure if the FDA is the right umbrella they'd be under).
A lot of those cosmetic contacts are made in China and imported with little to no regulation and can contain all kinds of things that aren't really supposed to go in your eyes. I wouldn't buy any unless they are from an optometrist and a known brand, preferably one made in the US or another country with stricter regulations than China, Taiwan, etc.

Never by used contacts. that is someone elses body fluids on a very delicate part of you. Not to mention they are only cleaned w/ saline which has no antiseptic properties. Spring for new ones or go without.

Definitely scary but $20 contacts and $60 ones from a reputable seller and not a costume store should stand for something and in addition, she admits to sleeping with them in.

I think it's been about 2 years since my last optometrist appt so it’s time for another free visit, now is definitely a good time so I can check what my optometrists current position is and whether they sell the same items and at what cost.

Ask your eye doctor. If he says okay, then I say go for it.

Don't buy them.... It is VERY difficult to get a pair that actually fit YOUR eye. Even for cosmetic contacts it is best to have a prescription for them. The eye doctor gets measurements of your eye so the contact will fit properly. If it doesn't fit properly it will move around and be very uncomfortable. You won't need the red contacts anymore because your own eyes will be bloodshot from the friction.

I wear prescription lenses and sometimes contacts. I got a whole bunch of purple and green contacts a few years ago.

I never had any problem with them, just be sure not to sleep in them. and get them from a doctor, they may be a little more pricey, but totally worth it

I do not wear or need glasses or contacts.

A few years ago I bought some of the white contact lenses to wear while working in a haunted house during the Halloween season. I wore them nightly for up to 6 hours and I never had any problems with them or my eyes. I even made sure to ask my eye doctor if they were OK to wear and he said if it was in short spans like I was doing and I kept them clean it was not an issue. He did bring up getting a pair that fit correctly and I just lucked up that mine did.

The biggest problem I had was just what I said earlier I had never worn contacts in my life so I had to learn how to put them in and take them out and clean them.

My opinion get them and try them if they are comfortable and don't cause you any problems then you're good.

Oh and I had so much fun wearing them and seeing people freaked out.

I have no info on the contacts but I have some other suggestions you might try. We did the dead bridal party several years ago and it was often a winner.

    1) If you are okay to ruin your dress, you could set parts of it on fire and stomp them out right away. It gives your dress a decaying in the grave look

    2) When I was a dead bride, I used fake spider web as my veil. I also glued a fake black plastic spider to my white made up face.

    3) Baby power makes excellent "grave dust". Especially dusted fairly liberally on the shoulders of the groom. Then when people pat him on the shoulders a poof of powder goes up.

Have fun! I know we had a blast!

I'm an optician and totally agree with this. You have no idea how many people we see a day because they bought their contacts on-line and now their eyes are screwed up. They are fun and make an impact but you really need to be fitted for them by your doctor!

Just make sure not to wear them for a LENGTHY period of time. I have circle lenses, and I have never had any problems. I only wear them for a max of about 6 hours though, and never sleep in them.
The problem with circle lenses and those made for halloween are that they are a thicker material, being that they are mostly to all colored, and do not let you eyes breath like normal contacts do. After some time of your eyes not being able to get proper oxygen, they will become irritated and possibly cause damage to the eye.....at least that is what I have read on sites that I buy my circle lenses from...
    Just use caution♥

I spent a lot of money last year getting 1 pair of regular theatrical style contacts and 1 pair of custom hand painted theatrical contacts. Niether was worth it. Wasted tons of money. I don't care for them, and the most expensive ones are also very uncomfortable.

Have you ever worn contacts before? If you haven't, you will probably only be able to wear them for a short time anyway because it takes a lot of getting used to having something foreign in your eye. Most new contact owners have to work their way up to longer periods of time with them in.

Bottom line, like others said, is to check with your eye doctor. Don't mess around with your eyes! They are too valuable!
  • Know anyone w/ pinkeye? Very easy to pick it up from them, and guaranteed to have RED eyes.....FOR FREE

I have bought them a few times, loved them, no problems =) I was lucky enough that an eye Dr near me offered special effects lenses during halloween so I didn't have to mail order.....

if your doc says its okay you should do it! but just a warning...unless you are VERY comfortable with touching your eye, it will take you a while to learn how to get them in and out. The first time I took them out on my own, it took me an hour. Now it takes two seconds. Putting them in still takes a while sometimes, especially if my eyes are irritated or tired. But there is a learning curve!
  • You should be fitted if you have never worn contacts before, it is for your comfort and safety.

That said there are more then enough places online that are willing to sell contacts without prescriptions, I have even seen them at flea markets. I have been wearing contacts for years and know my size so I will order online as long as they are new. I have a set of white outs I wear that are similar to the red ones you have shown. An important thing to note is that the pupil/black is the only part that is clear, and it stays the same size. So when you are in a dim area when your pupil normally would expand to help yo see better you do not get the benefit. It is very dangerous to drive with them in at night, so have someone else drive you around.

This is me in some zombie makeup with my eyes in.

I got a pair from Coastal Contacts, brand was Marietta Vision. I do normally wear contacts and got a prescription pair but wasn't able to get my exact base curvature but it was pretty close. They did become uncomfortable after a while but were well worth it for the time I wanted to wear them.

I have a pic of me wearing them in my profile, if you can't see it you can friend me, take a look and then defriend me if you wish.
