what do you use to measure your times when jogging?

I want to get a runner freindly digital watch. I'd like it to beep or notify me somehow every so many minutes so when I am doing interval training. Anything out there with this capability? I used my old Timex digital until it died and I would just put the timer on 5 minutes and it would let me know every five minutes, pretty simple and straight forward.. but I'd like one that would automatically jump to a "1 minute timer" for example and back and fourth.

Any ideas?

I've started using one of the apps for my phone which does all the above and more, but would like not to have to carry the phone all the time..

tks

  • Timex ironman watches have good timer features, including one with sets and reps.

I don't use a watch, I use the Runkeeper App for my phone which alerts you of distance, pace, etc. every 5 minutes. I also use the Couch to 5k app for interval training, since I am just building up right now. Of course none of this applies if you don't have a smartphone...

I've got a cheap timex from Target that I use occasionally, but most of the time I use my Suunto HRM.

Since my iPhone is also my tunes for my runs (and since I think it is always wise to carry a phone on my runs), I just use the Runkeeper app.

I know I've done some intervals on my timex, but nothing very sophisticated.

I have an armband for my iPhone and use the RunKeeper app. I run in the early morning and my watch/HRM was too tough to keep looking at in the dark.

you know you can create interval workouts in RunKeeper too, right? that way it is all in one app. ;)

Yeah, I did realize that later, but I have both so I use Couch to 5k since it's already there :)

There's any number of things. As already mentioned, the Timex Ironman watches have good timers, there's the runkeeper app (if you have an later generation iPod, iPhone or an Android phone).

I have a Garmin Forerunner 305 which allows me to program intervals by distance or time. A good number of these types of watches will have that functionality, but they're not cheap.

Another option, if you have an older iPod or some other MP3 player, Steve Boyett, creator of the PodRunner series, also has a PodRunner: Intervals series, which are DJ mixes with interval cues in the music (located here: http://www.djsteveboy.com/intervals.html). He's got a few levels, one that matches up with the intervals for C25K, an 8K and 10K program and one that's generic for interval training. I run with his normal series often, and have used the interval mixes a couple times. They're good to help keep pace and you don't have to worry about missing your cue from your watch because you've got your headphones on.
