Well, I've done something to my knee. When I was out running yesterday, twice, it just sent a quick jolt of pain, now it is popping occasionally. It doesn't hurt all the time, only when it pops. I have an MD appt next week anyway, so I'll have him check it out then, but here's my dilemma...I'm 4 weeks from the half marathon. I really can't afford to miss any training days. I just walked today to take it easy on the knee, but I'm due for 8-9 miles tomorrow. I don't know if I should try to run it, or just rest it until I see the doctor.

Any advice from my fellow runners??

Oh my, sorry to hear about your injury. If your doc appointment is next week I would strongly encourage against running the 8-9 miles until you get an okay from the doc. You're really and truly not going to lose much in the way of training by missing that run. And in fact the rest might be good for your knee. But you can most surely injure it further by doing that run. Rest, see the doc, get cleared and then you can move forward.

    Good luck!
  • All I can do is wish you luck. I HATE injuries.... and I especially hate taking time off for them, but it's necessary for healing. I was really worred about my left knee for a long time. I finally went to the doc and she said I had a little fluid, get over it (Navy doc, lol). As soon as I got really into lunges and squats, and built up some good leg stength, my knee pain finally went away. It pops sometimes. Some days it still hurts. And every once inawhile if I stand up funny, there is a wonderful crunching sensation. Ah, to be a runner.

My advice is to take it easy, even though that's the hardest thing to ask a runner to do.

i wouldnt take the chance of screwing your knee up. Do RICE (rest, ice, compression and elevation) and wait to hear from your doctor. I would rather not do a long run than to hear my doctor telling me that i cant run for the rest of the season

I have had that symptom in the past and was diagnosed with chondromalacia patellae (runner's knee).

Check out runnersworld.com or this page where you can download a guide to runner's injuries:

In my case, I had roughened cartilege and I was in constant pain for 30 years until I started taking glucosamine.

Some people benefit from physio to strengthen the leg muscles so that the patella tracks correctly.

Good luck with this and I hope you enjoy your half.

Do you think a short run would hurt - I could always stop and walk if it starts to hurt? I hate being still...buggggggsssss me...
