Adult Section needed?

Given everything going on, would it not be wise for there to be an adult section / humour ? That way if people don't want to be involved, they don't have to sift through the posts, and if they do well then it's game on.

Ths IS a fantastic resource, with fantastic members, some have a different sense of humour from others, thats it.

Live and let live, but respect for both sides is definately needed I think before MFP implodes.

How would you keep out the non-adults? Or worse - how would you keep out the adults LOOKING for non-adults....

no security just a section where those who don't want to read posts they find offensive would be able to stear clear of. There is no 'secure' when it comes to the internet lets face it, just thinking it might stop the arguing / upset on this board.

It wouldn't matter...people would still go and start drama just to start it! People complain that too many women talk about their periods, but yet they still click on the topic just to complain, for example. But hey, it might work!! =)

We're working on groups to do exactly what you are describing. I talked about it at the bottom of the first page of this topic:

    http://www.myfitnesspal.com/topics/show/338971-am-i-crazy

The groups will still have rules - you won't be able to attack or insult other users, for example, and nudity won't be allowed. But they'll have a bit more leeway than the main forums.

Until then, though, please make sure to refrain from adult topics on the main forums. That has been, and will continue to be, against the forum rules.

    Hope that helps.

Meh, how does one qualify what's "adult" and what's not? One person's snarky comment is another one's offensive bit. How would a section for people who don't want to read anything offensive actually work?

Reminds me of one of my favorite quotes from Robert Frost: "Education is the ability to listen to almost anything without losing your temper or your self-confidence."

I admit, I say this not really knowing what specific discussions would have generated this topic. But the only flirty-flirty, somewhat-perhaps-maybe-naughty stuff i've seen is in the "Chit-chat, Fun, and Games" forum, where...ya know...who cares?

Just my two cents...in what's sure to be a firestorm of responses. lol

    Thanks Mike.

Crossed with other posts, not ignoring just not fighting for a cause, it was just a suggestion as a way of people being able to have 'fun' and 'fun' apart from each other as there are lots of different views of what that means. it's not perfect and would fail at times but at leats it'd be worth a try.

all for the adult forum...but keep the nudity. never can have enough of that!
  • Doesn't even make sense. One offensive bikini thread gets nuked, the other one is still going strong.

In case you aren't aware of how America works, segregating like-minded individuals into groups does not mean that other people still won't a) take offense at whatever horrible thing those groups are doing and b) cause **** to try and shut them down. Tell someone "don't look over there or you'll see something you don't like" is a guarantee that they will do just that.

Good luck with your groups. Honestly the only thing that has truly offended me is moderation catering to some anonymous minority of crybabies. Assuming you are actually getting real complaints and not just taking preemptive action because you're worried about your ad revenue or something.

My opinion. Your site. I'll move on.

How 'bout "Mature" and "Immature"? But then again, how would we know which is which?

Well I would imagine that if someone goes into the adult section and complains it would be judged to differently than if it were an another section of the forum. One small corner of the site for dirty jokes and lewd comments. if you go in there and find yourself offended just leave! don't like it, don't read it. I've never understood people who feel the need to control what others can say.

All this can simply be resolved with answering this....

    I joined MFP because.....

If you want to talk about the issues of sexual topics, do so, but do so on a site in which there are controls to keep out the kids and the creeps that prey on kids. If you're a parent, I'm sure you can agree to this. If you're not one, put yourself in a parent's "shoes".

Why would children be on a weight loss site?

I am a parent. When my daughter is online I monitor what she's doing. I don't expect anyone else to do it for me.

I will so check out that thread and then complain about the lack of clothing, unless, of course, you put it under either "motivation" or "success stories" because it's ok to show off you underwear in those threads but not in "chit chat".

I don't think people are trying to control what others say - they just don't want to be exposed to it all the time. That's why we're excited about groups. Groups will be one step away from the main forums, so if you are looking for something in particular, you'll be able to find it. But if you're not, it won't be on your main forum page all the time.

In our minds, it's not enough to say "Don't read it if you don't like it." Just having the adult topics there, mixed in with the other topics you want to read, means that you have to deal with them constantly. Instead, groups will let members have that outlet if they want it, while other members can ignore them much more easily.

And you know EVERY step she takes? All it takes is one visit. I am a parent, I monitor, and still find stuff that comes up under Strict search setting. Nothing is bulletprrof. As for on a weight loss site...everyone here is over-weight?? Didn't think so. This is a Fitness forum.

The only controls to keep children out of adult sites are on the pay ones that require a credit card first. The free ones simply have to say "This site is for people 18 and over; if you are under 18, do not click ENTER." I'm sure that sooooo deters the children. It's really about parents monitoring what their children are doing and talking to them about the realities on the Internet.

For the record, I get some of the best and most honest support from some of those on here that others consider offensive.

Actually, it's not really ok to show off your underwear in any threads. We're planning on tightening up the photo rules as well. Our only hesitation is that we do appreciate the idea that a lot of members have been ashamed of their bodies for years, but with the help of MFP, some are feeling proud for the first time. We think that concept is pretty cool, and the idea of expressing that pride by showing yourself off is something we can relate to. But we do have concerns about photos that are too revealing in ANY forum, not just chit-chat, and so we're thinking about what the appropriate guidelines are.

Mike, I love the site. I really think it is probably one of the BEST programs created because it's helping me when I thought there was no help. I just don't understand the whole offense at anything everyone can see on a public beach or in Victoria Secret. I find old men in Speedos at the beach offensive to my eyes, but who am I to tell them to cover up, since anything pornographic is technically covered. That's all.

If we had an adult board for those with tasteless humor, wanting to know where to get drunk/laid etc...

Nobody would be on the other boards. Truly, I believe some people just need thicker skin, period. These boards prove that EVERYBODY IS DIFFERENT. You'll find people you connect with and some that you don't. It's important not to get huffy when you come across people that don't rub you the right way. Just find the people that do.

I honestly wonder how many people that complain about all the others and how rude everybody is etc... do you really complain that much in real life? Yikes.

Thanks for the feedback folks. Overall, our goal is to try to accomodate everyone. We hope groups will go a long way towards doing that. But in the meantime, please be considerate to our other members who have a different viewpoint than yours. We want to make sure the forums are a valuable resource for everyone, not just for most people.

Locking this topic for now. If you have additional feedback, feel free to send me a message. Thanks.
