So, awesome people, I have a heart rate issue and I'm looking for suggestions. My hubs has a really low resting heart rate, but his active heart rate spikes high and doesn't come back down. Today we did the Marine Corps mud run, my hr hight was 179, his was 212. In the first quarter mile his went up to 186 and didn't come back down. He's had stress tests and ekg's done and nothing has shown up. So, what do you think the problem/solution is?

I posted this on saturday and am hoping to maybe get some more eyes on it today as I received no responses then.

Have they done a 24-hour Holter monitor? If they do an EKG while he is resting, nothing may show up. I have an irregular heartbeat that was causing me to be symptomatic - I was very easily fatigued with even minor exertion (like walking up one flight of stairs or emptying the dishwasher). Mine did come on rather suddenly, however. I had an EKG, two 24-hour Holter monitors, an echocardiogram, and a stress echocardiogram. I have premature atrial contractions, was having more than one every minute of the day, and because I was extremely symptomatic they put me on a medication to slow my heart rate. Now my normal resting heart rate is around 48-54 bpm.

He needs to see a cardiologist and be persistent. It may be simply a normal variant, but it definitely should be checked out with more than an EKG.

Thanks, ginger, I'll start working on him to get with a cardiologist. His resting hr is already below 50, so I don't think they can bring it down even further, but hopefully they can come up with another solution.
  • What is the average resting heart rate? Mine is sometimes 90 and now im 78...

    First not medical advice here.

I had a similar problem, with any kind of exercise my HR would spike to 155-160, and approach 190 with even a slow jog (but could also run 71/2 minute miles, I would also invalidate the old military bike fitness test even at a low slow pedal, and it would take 45 minutes to go down below 120. I would also have headaches. I was put on propanolol for both issues, and now I have no headaches, but the most I can get my heart rate to is to 125, unless I run.

Everybody is different the old equation for max heart rate is only an estimate. If there's no pain with a 212 maximum, and with a basic cardiology screening, wouldn't worry but a little bit about it. One thing that helped me also was breathing control -- deep, hold and slow exhale, along with relaxing the body.
