I may be a slow runner but I have completed four marathons and 5 half marathons. You are never to old to start running and you cannot be so concerned about your speed that you give up. The goal is to attain the best physical fitness you can at your pace and be proud of what you have accomplished. Starting a race is stressful at any pace level. There is no better feeling than crossing the finish line and being handed a medal. ALWAYS than the volunteers and you run by them -- with out them I would have ever been able to reach my goals. Now I am on the journey to drop a few pounds, and just like running I like to get all the support I can. Good luck to all of us. Remember a Marathon starts with the first step, so get moving!!!

Right on, gmw391!! I've always done a little running here and there. More in some years and less in others depending on the different phases of my life, but I decided to participate in half marathons in all 50 states about 2 years ago. Me! And I'm so slow a sun dial works efficiently at recording my speed. :)

To date I've crossed more than 32 finish lines in as many states. All half marathons except the full one I did in Chicago. I would have celebrated my 50th birthday in NJ doing a half marathon, but Irene blew that idea all to heck.

I might ... just MIGHT ... do Goofy one day with my son. How cool would that be!

Hello, great post. I think I needed to read it too. This summer I started C25K (Couch to 5K run program) and I just completed it this week. For me it was really not couch since I had been walking an almost 5K lake path for years but I just wasn't a runner. I ended up starting to love running while on this program. However the problem is although I did the specified time (30 minutes) for me that wasn't a 5K distance since I am so slow. So I feel like I completed it and I didn't. I have a plan to work up to 5K and possible pick up some speed/distance which I will start soon. I had specified a 5K to run this month but since I am not quite running that far yet I am waiting to sign up for it or another once I have actually run for that long. I am in my late 50's and I have some weight to lose as well so I will just keep working at it. Add me as a friend if you want as well.
