I've heard from a few sources that when trying to lose weight and get fit that it sometimes helps to have protein shakes before bed, specifically casein protein since it's slow releasing. The whole idea is that when you sleep, your body goes into a catabolic state and uses your energy stored, often times including muscle. Drinking casein before bed is supposed to stop your body from absorbing muscle....or something like that
Just wondering if anyone has tried this and had different results? They say you can also have egg whites or cottage cheese for a similar effect.

it's a myth. your muscles don't go catabolic overnight. so if you want to, you can have a casein shake, eat cottage cheese etc before you go to bed, but it would confer any special advantage over not doing it0

I have heard all of the fads before - this builds muscle, this breaks down fat and perhaps some of them really do. Research has shown that natural foods actually do it better than anythingi the manufacturers have come up with. Milk builds muscle and reduces belly fat better than any of the sports drinks or protein shakes. It has protein (and I make mine in a shake). A quick Google search on this will give you a ton of info, 99% of which will tell you that, yes, casein is good before bed, if you are looking to build muscle. However, if you are looking to lose weight, make sure you consider the calories and don't go over what you have determined to be your optimum value to lose the amount of weight you are trying to lose. As for results, it is very difficult to find anyone who is only doing this (i.e. isolate the variable) and getting great success. So, it's hard to say what results are from what. (If that makes sense)0

Can you source that? Specific reference would be great since all the research I have done, including Pubmed, etc. seems to show the opposite. In fact it is especially effective in elderly adults.0
